Gwen Stacy’s opening in across the Spider-Verse: digital release experiences yet another change

Sony Pictures keeps fiddling with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s digital release, and Gwen Stacy’s grand opening is the next casualty while Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’s release hangs in the balance. Since its home release in August 2023, Spider-Man fans have been playing the game of “spot the difference” as they discover new details that have been changed in the digital version of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the second chapter in the animated Spider-Verse saga, which centres on Shameik Moore’s Miles Morales / Spider-Man. One user has been following all the updates through his own X account, and he recently published the most recent alteration to Gwen Stacy’s introduction.

Since fans first encountered Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, she has become a beloved character played by Hailee Steinfeld. Gwen’s opening sequence is just as grandiose in the home version as it is in the theatrical edition, but several changes—specifically, comic-stylized shots—have actually made it much better. For instance, the digital release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse now has a shot with five brand-new comic-style panels that showcases Gwen’s percussionist side. A comic strip depicting the moment Gwen is bitten by a spider in another scene includes far more detail. The whole theatrical and digital versions of Spider Woman’s introduction are shown here side by side.

The opening scene of Gwen Stacy is by no means the first to be changed after the film’s premiere. Fans have already observed that one of Gwen’s crucial words to Miles in the Mumbattan ruins was totally cut from the scene in the digital edition of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, so this is not even this character’s first scene to undergo changes upon home release. Aside from Steinfeld’s persona, Andy Samberg’s Ben Reilly also had the same unfortunate development; his humorous exchange with Miles in the moment where Scarlet Spider has Spider-Man in a headlock has been changed. The introduction of Miguel O’Hara, played by Oscar Isaac, has also been changed, particularly the way LYLA responds to Spider-Man 2099’s presence. Fans believe that this is precisely what Sony Pictures is attempting to avoid with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse by repeatedly pushing back its release date. All the changes Sony Pictures has made to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s digital version suggest that the film wasn’t exactly finished by the time it hit theatres.
