The cast of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse offers some artistic perspectives on how Gwen’s universe was created. These details can be seen in a trailer from Across the Spider-Verse’s home release that Screen Rant has exclusively made available. “The look for Gwen’s world comes from her comic books, and there are a lot of unusual colour choices,” said art director Dean Gordon. Yellow, red, and blue are the three main colours of our universe. They are blue, orange, and violet in her universe. Visual effects supervisor Mike Lasker continued, “Gwen’s world is a very wet medium, it’s brushy, and we have dripping paint.” The comic book aesthetic of Gwen’s home dimension was further emphasised by visual development designer Jay Thakur, who said, “It was more of a loose watercolour style along with influences from the comic books, which had these graphic cutouts.” Gordon elaborated on Gwen’s Earth’s distinctive visual aesthetic as the video came to a close. Gordon observed, “There are a lot of vertical brushstrokes.” “So, we took it and really made it louder. One aspect of her universe that we particularly loved was the fact that colour doesn’t always respect object boundaries. The colours would frequently bleed through the silhouette’s items.

After 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse, Miles Morales struggles with strained family connections in Across the Spider-Verse while keeping his superhero identity a secret from his parents. Along with having to deal with the evil Spot, Miles also faces exclusion from the multiverse’s Spider-Society and clashes with its leader Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099. According to co-producer Christopher Miller, Across the Spider-Verse gave the production crew the chance to “show the limitless possibilities of animation in a studio film.” One of the film’s directors, Kemp Powers, discussed the ambitious creative approach of Across the Spider-Verse and noted that there was a “openness to trying just about anything, both in terms of the visual and the storytelling language.” Despite rave reviews and successful box office returns, the animation team’s working circumstances have come under fire, and over 100 animators are said to have left as a result. The next Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse film will now be delayed by Sony due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
