Find out why Iron Man asked X-Men member Emma Frost to marry him.

Fans have been wondering how precisely Tony Stark and Emma Frost of the X-Men would get married ever since the news was announced back in June. After all, the two haven’t been dating in the comics up until this point. You can see how the proposition played out in this 9to5marvel exclusive peek of Invincible Iron Man.

Written by Gerry Duggan, illustrated by Juan Frigeri, coloured by Bryan Valenza, and lettered by Joe Caramagna, Invincible Iron Man continues recent events from the X-Men and Invincible Iron Man comics connected to the Fall of X crossover storyline. The X-Men were ambushed during the annual Hellfire Gala, a celebration of mutantkind, by the anti-mutant group Orchis. Charles Xavier was compelled by Orchis to utilise his mutant abilities during their invasion to push the majority of mutants on Earth off of the planet, but Xavier was unaware that the teleportation gates on the mutant island of the X-Men had been tampered with. In truth, they were only dispersed around the Marvel Universe, but he thinks he just murdered 200,000 mutants. A few seasoned X-men who had been taught to fend off Xavier’s telepathy were able to escape. They have now relocated underground and are battling Orchis covertly. Emma Frost has posed as Tony Stark’s assistant while wearing one of the special rings that the X-Men use to hide their abilities from the mutant-hunting Sentinels.

The antagonistic Feilong, a mutant-hating businessman who has appropriated Tony Stark’s Iron Man technology to employ in the construction of upgraded Sentinels, is the key story thread that has connected Invincible Iron Man and the X-Men series (Gerry Duggan is penning both this issue and the flagship X-Men title). James “War Machine” Rhodes, Tony’s closest buddy, has been falsely accused of murder by Feilong, who is now extorting Tony. Tony must portray a damaged man who has succumbed to drunkenness as a result of Feilong. Since Feilong plays a significant role in the Orchis organisation, it goes without saying that the X-Men also seek to eliminate him. In these sample pages, Tony Stark is initially shown reluctantly agreeing to an arrangement that Wilson Fisk and Emma Frost have negotiated, whereby the three of them would basically assume control of the Hellfire Club, with Fisk serving as the Club’s White King. Typhoid Mary, the wife of Fisk, was one of the mutants who appeared to have been slain, therefore he has a stake in eliminating Orchis as well. In these pages, Tony effectively begs Fisk to defend Rhodey’s reputation.

While all of this is going on, Frost decides to blow her cover when she encounters Feilong at a party at Tony’s house. She takes off her power-inhibitor ring and uses her abilities to murder Feilong. By eliminating Feilong before they can disable his technology, Tony argues that by doing so, she would win a battle but lose the war. Tony is thrown to the ground as she knees him in the groyne. Tony is seen clutching a ring as he is on his knees when Feilong enters the room. The rest is history.
