The Marvels director discusses the production moment that most surprised her.

Nia DaCosta has frequently discussed her experience making such a well-known movie as The Marvels, and she has now revealed yet another amusing or perhaps shocking tidbit about the Brie Larson-starring picture. This November marks the release of the MCU’s fifth and final Phase film of 2023, and the promotional campaign has just begun. DaCosta has essentially taken on this difficult duty by herself alone because Larson is now unable to promote The Marvels because she and the rest of the actors are on strike. In a brand-new interview, the director talked about how the movie came together, how she got along with Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, and what she found most amazing about the finished product.

DaCosta hasn’t always gotten along with the crew on the sets of the previous films she’s directed, and as a result, she’s had a few unpleasant encounters there. She was allowed to select her own crew for The Marvels, which was fortunate for her because she was able to avoid similar issues. The director realised how crucial it was to have the appropriate personnel on her team. She remarked, “I realised it was always going to be the people that I surrounded myself with, no matter how much authority I accumulated, how many amazing films I did, or whether I won prizes. The bond she had with certain team members turned out to be DaCosta’s biggest and most satisfying revelation from her time on The Marvels. The filmmaker said, “The thing that’s astonished me the most lately is how much respect I’m receiving from these middle-aged white males that I work with.

After Candyman, the director’s relationship with her Marvel cast was a breath of new air. This 2021 follow-up to the 1992 film of the same name was warmly welcomed by critics and audiences alike, particularly for DaCosta’s efforts as director, but the production’s set was not a pleasant place to work. The director described encountering harassment from several members of the team who made “super inappropriate” comments that, in her words, “you would just never say to anyone else because they were so specific to my gender, my race, and my age.” The Marvels by DaCosta will smash box office records; in fact, it has the greatest budget of any film directed by a Black woman. This puts a lot of pressure on everyone engaged in the production, but especially on the director. She chose to refrain from using social media until the film is released in part because of this. DaCosta has saved herself from reading the unneeded criticism of her directing abilities that comes with The Marvels, just like it did with its predecessor Captain Marvel. Just getting ready for it, I said. She said, “I am a sensitive soul, and I think maybe more of us are than we care to admit.
