George Clooney, Scarlett Johansson, Tyler Perry, and Other restless A-list actors pressure SAG-AFTRA to get a deal

A group of highly influential A-list actors, including George Clooney, Tyler Perry, Scarlett Johansson, Emma Stone, and Ben Affleck, has intensified the pressure on the leadership of the Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) to find a resolution to the ongoing actors’ strike, now stretching into its 97th day. In a recent Zoom meeting with Fran Drescher, the president of SAG-AFTRA, and Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the union’s executive director, these actors conveyed their concerns and discontent regarding the stalled negotiations, seeking a way to restart talks and put an end to the strike.

The meeting, described as “supportive” in tone, was not merely an expression of solidarity. The A-listers represent a faction within the guild deeply dissatisfied with the impasse and are eager to explore avenues for reinitiating negotiations. Tyler Perry, who employs a significant workforce at his studio in Atlanta, has been particularly concerned about the protracted strike’s impact on his production activities.

During the meeting, which also featured a “presentation” by the group, Fran Drescher and Duncan Crabtree-Ireland listened attentively and were expected to meet with the SAG-AFTRA Negotiating Committee to formulate a response. However, neither the actors’ representatives nor SAG-AFTRA disclosed the specifics of the discussions.

The main sticking point in the negotiations has been SAG-AFTRA’s demand for a new streaming residual model in addition to existing streaming residuals. The union seeks $500 million annually, to be collected as a per-subscriber fee from streaming platforms and administered via a jointly managed trust, based on viewership data for each show. The studios have rejected this as economically unfeasible. The A-list actors are actively engaged in finding a mutually acceptable solution to this critical issue.

This situation underlines the gravity of the strike, as it has now exceeded the length of the 1980 strike, which lasted 95 days. Fran Drescher remains committed to securing a groundbreaking deal for actors, although this unity of purpose has faced occasional tensions, as evidenced by the open letter from another group of A-listers urging leadership to take a harder stance in negotiations. The outcome of these recent developments may have a significant impact on the ongoing labor dispute in the entertainment industry.
