Yuri Lowenthal, who played the superhero in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, was thrilled to have a brief return to the character in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. During an interview, Lowenthal shared his behind-the-scenes experiences recording his lines and bringing Spider-Man from Insomniac Games to a larger animation audience. He described working with co-writer Phil Lord as a blast, saying they had some stuff they thought they would use, a couple lines, and said, We think this is going to be it, but let’s spend an hour riffing and see what other sort of funny things we can come up with. We were honoured that they would want to include Insomniac’s Spider-Man as part of the cinematic Spider-Verse, so I just brought that guy, which was basically just bringing me to the room. It was so much fun simply coming up with ideas with him, even though I believe in the end they ended up doing pretty much what they had first planned to do.”
Insomniac Spider-Man has already interacted with the multiverse on several occasions. During the release of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and the game, the character was recruited by Superior Spider-Man to fight the Inheritors, and he played a supporting role in the 2018 “Spider-Geddon” comic. After seeing Into the Spider-Verse, Lowenthal revealed in the interview that he had become a huge fan of the Spider-Verse franchise, saying, “I loved that first movie so much.” It feels amazing to be involved. “The first movie sort of teased the second one, dropping a couple of Easter eggs,” referring to Spider-Man’s PlayStation 4 outfit that made an appearance in Earth-1610 Peter Parker’s underground hideout. “The second one was awesome.”
Moreover, Sony brought back a few other Spider-Man actors in addition to Lowenthal for Across the Spider-Verse. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Donald Glover, who portrayed Aaron Davis and served as Miles Morales’ primary inspiration, had a brief appearance next to PS4 Spider-Man in a live-action role as a Prowler who was being kept captive by the Spider-Society. In a select sequences, Josh Keaton, who provided the voice of Spider-Man in The Spectacular Spider-Man, also returned to the beloved cartoon version. A Lego version of Spider-Man, repurposed footage from Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s worlds, and a prolonged sequence from the Venom universe were among the other noteworthy Spider-Man cameos. Meanwhile, the launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has turned out to be a huge smash for Sony’s gaming system. In addition to winning praise from critics everywhere, the PlayStation 5 game allegedly sold 2.5 million copies in its first day of release, making it the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios title to date.
