When Spider-Boy does make an appearance in comic book stores, Bailey Briggs has a whole new roster of villains. An intense brawl at a bowling alley launches Dan Slott’s much awaited Spider-Boy series. Bailey, Spider-Man’s seemingly unnoticed sidekick, joins forces with Gutterball, a brand-new antagonist. Spider-Boy calls Gutterball one of his “deadliest foes” even if his moniker doesn’t resonate with anyone. The Spider-Heroes win a pun-filled battle, but Bailey’s happiness is short-lived. Bailey soon obtains the Daily Bugle and discovers that he has reached the front page as the newest “monster” in New York City.
Many of these “humanimal” villains are first presented to fans in this spectacular debut issue. The epic battle between Spider-Boy and Hellifino, the rhinoceros hybrid, is revealed to the readers. The issue introduces Hellifino, along with a number of other villains still unnamed that Madame Monstrosity developed, including Professor Emilio Helio, nicknamed the Balloon Man, who Bailey refers to as “one of the most diabolical” villains ever.
The Balloon Man is planning to conquer the planet in several stages. The first stage is to load balloons to the brim with a deadly gas he invented, known as Pernicious Polymer X, and let them go off all across the world. Before he can finish outlining his strategy, Spider-Boy’s pal Squirrel Girl (Doreen) cuts him off by making fun of his shrill voice. Bailey goes on to describe how the event that gave the Balloon Man his abilities damaged his respiratory system, forcing him to breathe in helium in order to survive, leaving his voice permanently altered. Spider-Boy writer Dan Slott discussed Bailey Briggs in further detail at New York Comic Con, explaining why he has his own rogues’ gallery rather of sharing it with Miles Morales and Peter Parker. “He will come against a plethora of diverse antagonists. We did not want to deprive Spider-Man and Miles Morales of enemies. The same antagonists appear in all of these distinct Spider-Man novels. He said, “We didn’t want to be one of those. Slott went into further detail about how these new enemies for Spider-Boy were created. “We begin to think about all these strange guys. Gutterball is a robber from a bowling alley that has a huge bowling ball for a head. Professor Emilio Helio, a balloon man who fills balloons with terrible gases and controls gases the same way Magneto controls metal, is one of our guys,” the man stated. “You’re going to get a whole lot of new characters,” the writer promised them, assuring them that these antagonists are only the beginning of what’s to come.
