Marvel’s What If…? season 2, the last Marvel Cinematic Universe release of 2023, will bring Iron Man back one more time, demonstrating that the legendary hero can be tastefully revived. In Avengers: Endgame, Tony Stark used the Infinity Stones to defeat Thanos and his army, even though it meant losing his own life. This was Iron Man’s last live-action role. Although Robert Downey Jr.’s farewell performance as Tony Stark is the ideal way to conclude his time in the MCU, Iron Man’s final appearance solidified his status as one of the franchise’s greatest heroes. However, What If…? shows that he is capable of coming back and leaving his legacy untarnished. With Tony Stark launching the MCU timeline in 2008 with Iron Man and continuing to be one of the franchise’s most important characters throughout the Infinity Saga (Phases 1-3), Robert Downey Jr. is one of the superhero movie genre’s greatest casting choices ever. The Multiverse Saga of new Phases makes it easier for fans of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man to wish to see him return, even though his Endgame sacrifice allowed him to exit the character on the highest possible note. Thank goodness, What If…? gives the MCU a widely acknowledged way to bring Iron Man back for several appearances.
Five distinct Iron Man incarnations, all based on the mainstream MCU version, were introduced in What If…? season 1, which included at least one new reality per episode. Sadly, almost every new Iron Man version ends tragically, and never with the same weight as his mainstream predecessor. However, What If…? received positive reviews, and the majority of viewers do not deny that the series damaged Iron Man’s reputation. What Happens If? Again, there has been little backlash over Iron Man’s participation; season 2 is expected to have at least three different Iron Mans throughout its multiverse episodes. The best way to satisfy fans’ need for additional Iron Man in the series is to employ Tony Stark variations that are sufficiently distinct from the first edition. Naturally, this is much simpler in an animated series, as Tony Stark may be voiced by a different actor while maintaining a character design that is similar to Robert Downey Jr.’s version of the character.
The easiest approach for the MCU to bring back Iron Man without spoiling his demise in the Endgame is through multiverse versions of the character. Not only has Robert Downey Jr. moved on from the part, but Kevin Feige, the CEO of Marvel Studios, has publicly opposed bringing back the popular interpretation of Iron Man. Resurrecting Iron Man would mean undoing his famous MCU sacrifice and calling for an equally, if not more, memorable exit, which is practically unfeasible. The multiversal ideas of Marvel’s What If…? and other new MCU projects allow audiences to revisit Iron Man while honouring his heritage.
