Steven Yeun leaves the Thunderbolts Movie for Marvel

It seems that a new actor will be required to play The Sentry in the next Thunderbolts film. Early in 2023, rumours circulated that Steven Yeun will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thunderbolts. Yeun’s role as The Sentry has now been revealed by Robert Kirkman, his colleague on The Walking Dead and Invincible. Rumour has it that Yeun has left the production, therefore it appears the character will be replaced. Yeun is apparently no longer going to be in the movie, however it’s unclear why he’s leaving yet.

Yeun has previously appeared to be quite excited about his part in Thunderbolts. He said that one of the directors of the Netflix miniseries Beef, which he starred in, helped him land the job; that filmmaker is also helming the Thunderbolts movie. “It kind of came together in a weird way,” Yeun hinted to THR in June of last year. Jake Schreier, who directed episodes of Beef, was given the job. He seemed to see myself in this capacity. I thought, “This is actually a really interesting role,” after reading the description. I’d be willing to investigate this.” Yeun is well-known for his portrayal of The Walking Dead’s beloved zombie slayer Glenn Rhee. Later, for his performance in the play Minari, he would be nominated for an Academy Award. He most recently starred in Netflix’s Beef, for which he received an Emmy nomination. Additionally, he has been providing the voice of the lead superhero in the animated series Invincible on Amazon. The actor will also feature with Robert Pattinson and Mark Ruffalo in Bong Joon-ho’s next film, Mickey 17.

Lee Sung Jin wrote Thunderbolts, directed by Schreier, based on an earlier Eric Pearson script. Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier), Hannah John-Kamen (Ava Star/Ghost), Wyatt Russell (John Walker/U.S. Agent), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova/Black Widow), David Harbour (Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian), Olga Kurylenko (Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster), and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Valentina Allegra de Fontaine) are among the cast members who were previously announced to feature in the movie. The project’s filming was supposed to begin in the summer of 2023, but the strikes in the film industry caused a delay. Yeun would have probably already filmed the film in which she played The Sentry if there hadn’t been this delay. It is presently anticipated that the movie will begin production in the spring of 2024. Who might take Yeun’s position as The Sentry in Thunderbolts is currently unknown.
