Exclusive: Peter Parker is having trouble thinking of himself as the greatest Spider-Man

Spread MCU News

Superior Spider-Man is written by Dan Slott, illustrated by Mark Bagley, inked by John Dell, and lettered by Joe Caramagna. It carries on the central conflict of the series, which is that Otto hired a lab assistant named Estrella Lopez while he was Spider-Man. Because Lopez solved a problem that Otto was unable to, Otto later returned to his Doctor Octopus body and lost all memory of how he had solved it. He then unintentionally freed Lopez, whom he had imprisoned after she had exposed herself to a lot of radiation and developed into an extremely strong entity. Now referring to herself as Super-Nova, Lopez seeks retribution on the Spider-Man she knows, whom she is unaware isn’t even the present Spider-Man.

The day can only be saved by ONE man! Alright, a single dude and his legions of disposable Spider-Minions! We are going to restart the Spider-Base! Get the Arachno-Mechs refuelled! Get your web-cannons loaded! It’s finally here—the moment you’ve been waiting for! Get dressed, idiots! We intend to go to WAR! When Estrella only knew Peter as Spider-Man, he attempted to flee by assuming his prior persona. But Octavius found him when he was hiding as Spider-Man, and that revelation not only confirmed Peter’s identity as Spider-Man but also restored Otto’s long-lost memories of his Spider-Man days. After meeting Anna-Maria Marconi, Peter was told to notify Spider-Man to meet Anna-Marie at his old headquarters by Super-Nova, who had come and taken her captive. The catch is that Peter is completely unaware of that basis, thus in order for him to effectively become the Superior Spider-Man, he must work with Octavius!

In order to devise a strategy for saving Anna-Maria, Peter and Otto break into Peter’s laboratory at Oscorp in the preview pages. Peter has an intriguing perspective as well. As Otto’s memories were recovered from a previous incarnation of Superior Spider-Man (and prior to that, from a duplicate of Doctor Octopus’s brain from before he became Spider-Man), Otto is unable to recall the exact moment when he gave up control of Peter’s body in order to save Anna-Maria the first time. Peter isn’t sure whether he can trust this version of Otto Octavius because, in his opinion, he has never truly shown himself to be a hero. Ultimately, however, Peter realises that the only way Anna-Maria can be saved is if he collaborates with Otto—even though he doesn’t yet trust him. To that end, we see Peter don the Superior Spider-Man costume, trying to mimic Otto’s flamboyant manner of speaking, and exclaiming, “The Die is Cast!” Can Peter really pull off posing as the Ultimate Spider-Man? Next week, we’ll find out!
