Madame Web breaks two regrettable records for Spider-Man universe on Sony

As the recently released superhero film sets two regrettable records for the film series, Madame Web continues to create a web of mediocrity for the Sony Spider-Man Universe. As of the time of writing, Madame Web has a 14% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing Morbius’s 15% rating to become the lowest-rated SSU film ever. Furthermore, Madame Web is the first SSU film to have a “rotten” rating with its audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 58% audience score. Madame Web has been criticised by critics for a number of reasons, including its storyline and departure from the original comic book material. It seems to be the latest misstep from the SSU and its slate of Marvel movies. Since the release of its first official trailer in November of last year, the film has had difficulty generating hype, and thus far, the box office has reflected this lack of enthusiasm. Madame Web, which made $6.1 million domestically on its opening day and is expected to make up to $25 million during the first five days in theatres, received little love from moviegoers on its Valentine’s Day (February 14) premiere. The budget for the movie was eighty million dollars.

Madame Web, which starred Dakota Johnson as the title paramedic-turned-hero, saw several rewrites throughout production since the actor disclosed that the finished version differed from the version of the film that was presented to her when she joined the cast. Johnson also acknowledged that, despite having previously voiced her reservations about her performance and the direction the picture might go, she has not yet seen the theatrical version of Madame Web and has no plans to do so anytime soon. Johnson appears in Madame Web alongside Isabela Merced (Anya Corazón/Araña), Celeste O’Connor (Mattie Franklin/Spider-Woman), and Sydney Sweeney (Julia Carpenter/Spider-Woman). The movie tells the story of Cassandra Webb’s transformation from an uncomfortable doctor to a superhuman after a terrible tragedy. She is then entrusted with defending Julia, Mattie, and Anya from a murderous enemy. The fourth SSN movie that Sony has released is Madame Web; the others being Venom, Let There Be Carnage, and Morbius. Madame Web, which was directed by S.J. Clarkson, follows The Marvels, a dismal superhero film that failed to recoup its $275 million budget. Recently, Clarkson applauded the film’s characters and her cast’s performances, saying she thought it had a lot of positive aspects that moviegoers would like.
