Marvel X-Men ’97’s TV rating points to a more adult continuation

There’s an official rating certification for X-Men ’97. Disney+ has changed its X-Men ’97 listing page, as reported by X, and it now shows that the upcoming animated series has a TV-14 rating. Considering that X-Men: The Animated Series, its predecessor, was classified TV-Y7, this is a little odd. However, it seems likely that Marvel Studios could wish to appeal to the show’s now older following given that the target demographic for X-Men: TAS has aged significantly since it went off the air in 1997. The Motion Picture Association’s PG-13 rating for the majority of Marvel Studios’ superhero films is comparable to a TV-14 rating.

According to the official synopsis, X-Men ’97 takes place a few months after the events of “Graduation Day,” the series finale of X-Men: The Animated Series. It revisits the iconic 1990s as The X-Men, a group of mutants who use their extraordinary abilities to protect a world that despises and fears them, are challenged like never before and must face a perilous and unexpected new future. Earlier this month, the first teaser for the highly anticipated animated continuation was published, giving fans a sneak peek at what to expect from the highly anticipated series. Much of the primary cast of X-Men: The Animated Series has returned for X-Men’97, including Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Lenore Zann as Rogue, Christopher Britton as Mister Sinister, and George Buza as Beast. Ray Chase, a newer cast member, talked about carrying on the late Norm Spencer’s legacy as Cyclops’ voice actor. Norm Spencer was an incredible, modest, and really humorous man, based on all the information I could find from interviews, Spencer wrote on X. “I’m sorry he was unable to participate in this incredible continue, but I’m honoured to hold the torch in his honour. I appreciate Meredith Layne and head writer Beau DeMayo’s faith in me.” Marvel said that a second 10-episode season had been ordered ahead of the show’s debut. Despite the lack of information on Season 2, Zann has hinted that filming has already started. She said, “I’m back in the studio continuing to record Season 2 of X-Men 97 for Marvel Studios – this time in Burbank,” on X in December 2023. I’m happy to be back, and I have no doubt that you will all like our new programme just as much as I do.” Before this, Zann hinted that X-Men ’97 will be “a wild ride” for fans.
