The Thunderbolts plot has been revealed ahead of the March start of filming on the Marvel Cinematic Universe collaboration film. The film Thunderbolts is set to shoot in Atlanta in March and, according to rumours, “centres on villains and antiheroes going on a mission that was supposed to end with their deaths.”Fans of the franchise may see some parallels between this story and the 2016 movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which also centred on a gang of rebels cooperating to steal the schematics for the Death Star. The gang was wiped out in the well-received Star Wars film, albeit not before they accomplished their goal. Marvel Studios has engaged Joanna Calo, the showrunner of the critically acclaimed FX series The Bear, to work on the Thunderbolts script. She is the third writer who has committed to work on the film. Screenwriter Jake Schreier for Thor: Ragnarok and Black Widow was first mentioned during the Thunderbolts unveiling. Lee Sung Jin, the author of Beef, joined in March 2023 to rework Schreier’s initial script.

Thunderbolts, which will be directed by Eric Pearson and was revealed by Marvel Studios at D23 Expo 2022, will centre on the title government-run squad, which will be put together by CIA Director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), and is composed of anti-heroes and erstwhile villains. Yelena Belova/Black Widow (Florence Pugh), Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Ava Starr/Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) will be the team’s original members, according to early concept art for the eagerly awaited film.

In addition to the performers already listed, Thunderbolts stars Geraldine Viswanathan in an unidentified role and Lewis Pullman (Top Gun: Maverick) as Robert Reynolds/Sentry. Viswanathan takes up the character of Emmy Award-winning actor Ayo Edebiri, who was forced to leave the film owing to schedule conflicts resulting from the 2023 Hollywood strikes. “Who knows what goes on behind the scenes, but I’ve always wanted to join the universe in whatever capacity, and this just came up,” Viswanathan said in a recent statement expressing his delight at joining the MCU. A great deal of… It was meant to be. When I answered the phone when Destiny phoned, I said, “I’ll be there.” really enthusiastic.”
