In contrast to the theatrical conclusion, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse almost ended on a depressing note. Directors Justin K. Thompson, Joaquim Dos Santos, and Kemp Powers discussed in an interview several plot alterations they made to the critically praised Spider-Man sequel that weren’t there when production started. This includes the two major turns in the plot that came at the end: Miles Morales learning that his Earth-42 counterpart is the Prowler, and Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman organising a group to return Miles home. Thompson said that they didn’t come up with the idea for the later sequence “until about six weeks before the film wrapped.”

Miles was on the bag as the film came to a close, and everyone was like, ‘Boo!'” We said, “Oh my god, what are we going to do?” We have to take action,” he said. “We realised as soon as we scrambled and brainstormed after running back. After watching The Empire Strikes Back once more, we asked ourselves, “How did Empire Strikes Back do it?” “Oh, they offered you hope at the end,” we realised.” Identifying the team-up image that brought Gwen, Across the Spider-Verse, and Spider-Man back together: Going into the supporting spider-variants of the Spider-Verse— a “Go Rescue Han moment,” Thompson went on— “We boarded it, animated it, put it all together within six weeks, and then screened it again.” The audience’s response was overwhelming, and we said, “All right.” Dos Santos noted that Miles momentarily charged up his bio-electricity powers despite being kept hostage by his parallel Uncle Aaron and other self, another fact they exploited to create a more optimistic cliffhanger. You can see the Prowler’s Gauntlet there, and it begins to fade a little bit because he is pulling strength from the gauntlet. It’s really, really subtle, he said. It’s almost subliminal, but those small details really assist to give Miles a sense of agency in the action.

Prior to the theatrical release of Across the Spider-Verse, Thompson disclosed that the movie had 280 Spider-Man characters, over a hundred of them were named or established variations. Though a few more Easter Eggs were taken into consideration for the finished project, these characters varied from a Lego dimension Spider-Man to the popular Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon. A spider-themed warming light would have been one such variation, paying homage to a legendary Spider-Man: Miles Morales bug, as disclosed during an interview between the Spider-Verse and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 game creators. The last Spider-Verse film, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is now in production. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes caused the film’s 2024 release date to be rescheduled. Although a fourth film has not yet been confirmed, actor Shameik Moore recently stated that he would be interested in playing Miles again if the chance arose.
