Jon Bernthal hints about his Punisher MCU comeback

With a mysterious Instagram post, Daredevil: Born Again actor Jon Bernthal hinted at his upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe comeback as Frank Castle/The Punisher. The actor shared a picture of the made-up children’s book One Batch, Two Batch without a message on his Instagram profile on February 11. Fans of Netflix’s Daredevil series may recall that Lisa Castle, Castle’s daughter, loved the children’s novel set in the same universe. “Penny and Dime,” a scene from Castle’s second season, shows how Lisa asked him to read it to her the night before she and the rest of the Castle family were killed. In order to explore Castle’s terrible past, it’s probable that the book may reemerge in the new Disney+ series, where Bernthal is presently filming Daredevil: Born Again.

In Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye, respectively, Charlie Cox (Daredevil) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Kingpin) made their comebacks. In March 2023, Bernthal’s return as Frank Castle/The Punisher was revealed. The Disney+ series is said to carry on stories from the Marvel Spotlight series Echo and the original Daredevil on Netflix, including Kingpin’s bid for mayor of New York City, though specifics of the narrative are still being withheld. Online set images have also been leaked, revealing not only the return of The Punisher but also potential plot points for the beloved anti-hero in the next season. Prior to a creative reimagining, it was not anticipated that Born Again would have any resonance with Netflix’s Daredevil series, which initially presented Cox as Man Without Fear. This is no longer the case, though, since Born Again is slated to be a direct sequel to the Netflix series’ first three seasons. Several beloved characters from Netflix’s Daredevil have been invited back for the second season thanks to this fresh creative vision, including Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page and Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson. To the excitement of MCU fans, both actors were soon sighted on site alongside Cox in New York when production started in January 2024.

Although there have been rumours circulating online that Marvel Studios is developing a new Punisher series, nothing concrete has been revealed as of yet. For its Disney+ material, Marvel is apparently planning to concentrate on more realistic superheroes going ahead. A female-led White Tiger series is allegedly being considered. The likelihood of a Punisher Season 3 on Disney+ has significantly increased if that is the case. Although Marvel has not publicly acknowledged that it has decided to switch to more realistic Disney+ programming, insiders have pointed out that films showcasing everyday heroes like Echo and Daredevil are far less expensive than those showcasing superheroes who necessitate costly special effects. The five-episode Marvel miniseries Echo, for example, only cost $40 million, a considerable fraction of the expense of the VFX-heavy She-Hulk: Attorney at Law ($212 million) and Secret Invasion ($225 million) series.
