Robert Downey Jr. launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his 2007 film Iron Man. Downey Jr.’s last appearance was in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, although he expressed a desire to return to the superhero genre. Following his devastating death in Avengers: Endgame, the actor moved on to other projects, including a role in Christopher Nolan’s most recent picture. Oppenheimer, released in 2023, earned the actor his first Academy Award for his portrayal as Lewis Strauss. However, Robert Downey Jr. has not ruled out a comeback to the MCU.

During an interview, Robert Downey Jr. stated that he would “happily” return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “It’s too much a part of my DNA,” Downey explained. “That role chose me.” And, as I often say, ‘Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige.’ This is a losing bet. He is the house. “He’ll always win.” His Iron Man co-star, Gwyneth Paltrow, who played Pepper Potts, said that Downey Jr. was an expert in improv. “There was this process of director Jon Favreau, Robert, and I coming into Jon’s trailer in the morning, and Robert saying, ‘I’m not fucking reciting these lines,’ and throwing them out. “And then live improvising in the trailer or on set,” she explains. However, not long ago, Robert Downey Jr. declared that his role as Iron Man in the MCU had worn off. “I will never be as cool as Tony Stark, but it was so great to be associated with someone like that for a while, and then it wore off.” So yet, there are no formal plans to bring Downey Jr. back as Iron Man.

Robert Downey Jr. is presently quite popular after his performance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Max’s The Sympathizer marks the actor’s comeback to television after more than two decades away. The actor takes on a new task in the program, which is based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name from 2016. It was also what drew him to the position. “I knew that playing Strauss, in Oppenheimer, was going to be like picking fly shit out of pepper—that it was going to be extremely exacting, that it was going to be… not confining, but liberating by its varied implicit limitations of what my normal toolbox is,” he explains. So I had a sense Sympathizer, like a coiled spring, would help me relax.
