As the first-ever R-rated movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Deadpool & Wolverine pushes uncharted territory. But according to director Shawn Levy, one feature of the picture prevented it from fully embracing its risqué nature. Levy discussed what may be included in the Phase Five tentpole with Total Film by delving into the creative discussions that go on behind the scenes of Deadpool & Wolverine. Levy claims that one topic that was excluded from the first discussions was drug use. To further the movie’s tendency of breaching the fourth wall, they did, however, manage to include a joke about the absence. “I’m so wary of what I can say but certainly there were early conversations about overt drug use,” Levy stated. “And we felt that was a worthwhile discussion. In fact, let’s construct a scene of dialogue where someone has it.”

In a recent teaser for Deadpool and Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds’ “Merc With a Mouth” made lighthearted references to cocaine addiction by criticizing Blind Al (Leslie Uggams) for allegedly selling him “Bolivian marching powder.” Deadpool & Wolverine’s marketing has made it apparent that nobody is off limits, not even Marvel CEO Kevin Feige, who is the target of several gags in the superhero movie.

Ahead of Deadpool & Wolverine’s much awaited release, anticipations are growing. The movie is expected to have a strong opening weekend at the box office thanks to strong early ticket sales. The Time Variance Authority (TVA) has given Wade Wilson and Logan (Hugh Jackman) a significant assignment that might completely alter the way the Multiverse functions in the most recent Deadpool movie, which seems to be a dramatic departure from the MCU’s current trajectory. Additionally, it is Jackman’s comeback as Wolverine; he previously portrayed the role in the 2017 movie Logan, which was nominated for an Oscar. Levy has previously reassured fans that Deadpool & Wolverine deserved its R-rating since it represents a change in tone for the MCU, with programs like Echo hinting at the darker direction of the film universe. After Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels’ record-breaking box office disappointments last year, Marvel will be hoping that Deadpool & Wolverine draws large crowds of viewers. In 2024, the lone MCU big-screen film is Deadpool & Wolverine.
