The team experimented with different skin thicknesses, opting for a thinner appearance to enhance the visibility of her knuckles pressing against his skin. The process of creating these effects involved a multi-step approach that started with comic book references, which the team aimed to match closely. To achieve the seamless integration of digital elements with live-action footage, tracking markers were used to replace limbs and faces. For instance, Emma’s hand would be positioned out of frame, and later replaced with a fully digital hand and arm interacting with a mostly digital face of Matthew Macfadyen. The detailed animation phase focused on the precise movements of the fingers over the skull, across the forehead, and into the eye sockets. This was followed by a final detailed sculpting and creature pass, where even the presence of a ring on Cassandra’s finger was carefully rendered to ensure authenticity.
