Behind the scenes: crafting Cassandra Nova’s mind-penetrating owers with VFX Supervisor Swen Gillberg

Spread MCU News

In the creation of the visually striking and unsettling scenes where Cassandra Nova’s fingers penetrate the skin and minds of her victims, VFX Supervisor Swen Gillberg and his team delved into meticulous detail to achieve a level of realism that is both fascinating and horrifying. The scene where Cassandra’s hands go through Mr. Paradox’s face is a prime example, showcasing every pore on his skin and the intricate interaction of her fingers with the contours of his skull. The team experimented with different skin thicknesses, opting for a thinner appearance to enhance the visibility of her knuckles pressing against his skin. The attention to detail extends to the moment her fingers slide over the eyeballs, causing them to pop out in a grotesque yet masterfully executed effect.

The process of creating these effects involved a multi-step approach that started with comic book references, which the team aimed to match closely. To achieve the seamless integration of digital elements with live-action footage, tracking markers were used to replace limbs and faces. For instance, Emma’s hand would be positioned out of frame, and later replaced with a fully digital hand and arm interacting with a mostly digital face of Matthew Macfadyen. The detailed animation phase focused on the precise movements of the fingers over the skull, across the forehead, and into the eye sockets. This was followed by a final detailed sculpting and creature pass, where even the presence of a ring on Cassandra’s finger was carefully rendered to ensure authenticity.

The scenes where Cassandra Nova’s powers are unleashed are not only a testament to the collaborative effort between stunts, camera work, visual effects, and props but also highlight the grounded approach taken in the superhero genre. Emma’s performance as Cassandra is praised for its depth and complexity, portraying a villain who is both psychopathic and compelling. The character’s actions, particularly during the assault scene, exemplify the movie’s ability to blend live-action stunts with CGI to create a visceral and emotionally charged experience. The result is a villain who, while despised, is also captivating, contributing to the rich tapestry of characters in the superhero universe.
