Following the largest upgrade to the movie in years, there are now two front-runners for the position of Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover character in Spider-Man 4, which is expected to carry on the franchise’s crossover tradition. At last, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4 is making progress at Sony and Marvel Studios. certainty the actor’s fame and the fact that Spider-Man: No Way Home almost made $2 billion globally, the project was a certainty. Unfortunately, the MCU’s Spider-Man 4 experienced a lengthy production pause owing to the 2023 Hollywood strikes and a director change. Sony and Marvel are now preparing for the start of filming. Jon Watts is out of the MCU after directing the Spider-Man trilogy. The filmmaker decided not to return for Spider-Man 4 and will instead be replaced by WandaVision’s Matt Shakman in Marvel’s next Fantastic Four revival. But Peter Parker’s next adventure will be directed by an MCU veteran. There are negotiations for Destin Daniel Cretton to direct Spider-Man 4. Despite directing a Spider-Man movie, the director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings still had ideas for a sequel. Spider-Man 4’s MCU crossover character is more likely to be one of two stars under Cretton’s direction.

There must be an MCU crossover character in every MCU Spider-Man film. That was the agreement reached by Marvel and Sony for Holland’s Peter Parker to be distributed equally between the two companies and feature in the MCU. While Maria Hill and Nick Fury appeared in Spider-Man: Far From Home, they were subsequently revealed to be Skrulls in disguise. Iron Man appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Lastly, there was a substantial part for Doctor Strange and a cameo by Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Shang-Chi is suddenly the most likely choice for Spider-Man 4.

Shang-Chi and Spider-Man have interacted before in the comics, with the Master of Kung Fu teaching the wall-crawler martial arts.

Shang-Chi’s MCU debut was made possible by Cretton, who is also the director of Spider-Man 4, thus there’s a good chance the character will make an appearance in the highly anticipated film. In the comics, Shang-Chi and Spider-Man have previously interacted, with the wall-crawler learning martial skills from the Master of Kung Fu. Spider-Man 4 in the MCU may depict a camaraderie akin to that of the heroes. Since Shang-Chi has only made one appearance in an MCU standalone film thus far, Spider-Man 4 presents the ideal opportunity to witness him interacting with people outside of his bubble.

Though Shang-Chi has emerged as the front-runner for the MCU crossover role in Spider-Man 4, Charlie Cox’s Daredevil is right behind him. After a hint of Matt Murdock and Peter Parker’s romance in Holland’s third MCU solo film, Spider-Man 4 would be the ideal project to have a full-fledged team-up between Spider-Man and Daredevil. The announcement that Cretton will helm the upcoming Spider-Man film is also welcome news for those hoping to see Daredevil make an appearance. Cretton has proven that he has the abilities to bring Daredevil to life on the big screen in both Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and his non-MCU ventures, such as Disney+’s American Born Chinese. Excellent hand-to-hand fighting scenes are a necessary for Cox’s Daredevil, in keeping with his Netflix series and MCU appearances. Cretton has a number of movies and television shows that showcase these kinds of confrontations. The conclusion of Spider-Man: No Way Home also hinted at the possibility of a more intimate street-level tale, which would be the perfect way to introduce Daredevil, who is also located in New York.

With Cretton directing, the most likely characters to show up in Holland’s Spider-Man 4 are Shang-Chi and Daredevil, but if a street-level plot is being explored, other MCU characters would also make sense. Over the years, the MCU has done a great job at adding several heroes to its depiction of New York. Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and Holland’s Peter Parker may meet paths in Spider-Man 4 after the release of Daredevil: Born Again in March 2025, particularly if the speculations that Kingpin would be the movie’s antagonist prove to be true. Due to their prior conflicts with Kingpin, Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton and Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop, the two Hawkeyes in the MCU, might potentially make an appearance to assist Spider-Man in the film. Wilson Fisk might not even be in the movie, but a more realistic tale set in New York City might include characters like Ms. Marvel, Doctor Strange, Netflix’s Defenders, and more. Spider-Man 4’s MCU crossover character might also be the hero, as Cretton is the creator of the forthcoming Wonder Man book.
