After making a cameo in the MCU’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, Andrew Garfield provides an optimistic update on the possibility of making a comeback as his version of Spider-Man. Nearly three years have passed since Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures released not one, but three live-action Spider-Man films on theaters. After Spider-Man: No Way Home’s conclusion, the Phase 4 movie remains the most successful MCU production in the Multiverse Saga, and fans are still holding out hope that Tom Holland will reunite Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s versions of the superhero. Following the cancellation of The Amazing Spider-Man 3, Garfield reflected on his experience as a cast member of Spider-Man: No Way Home in a new Esquire profile. In response to the question of whether he would ever think about reprising his role as Spider-Man in a future Marvel movie, Garfield emphasized that he always leaves the door open as long as “it was the right thing.” He declared:
For me, it was truly restorative. If it was the correct thing, if it contributed to the culture, if there was a wonderful notion, or if there was something that hadn’t been done before that was different, strange, and thrilling and that you could really get your teeth into, then I would without a doubt go back. That persona is very fun, and I adore it. If my delight contributes in any way, then I rejoice too.
For those hoping to see Garfield return in the future, the actor’s optimistic attitude towards continuing to play Spider-Man is encouraging, even though The Amazing Spider-Man 3 may never see the light of day. It’s clear that Garfield had fun bringing the best of both worlds to the role of Spider-Man in a joint Marvel Studios/Sony Pictures release. It’s difficult to envision Garfield not reprising his role as the webslinger in upcoming episodes if that’s the scenario he’s asked to participate in. Many people have speculations regarding Garfield’s prospective return to the MCU chronology, with some suggesting that his Spider-Man may appear in Avengers: Doomsday and/or Avengers: Secret Wars. That would be the most obvious spot to have Garfield show up, especially considering the movies are the end of The Multiverse Saga. Additionally, it would allow Garfield’s Spider-Man version to interact with several other Marvel characters from both the MCU and outside of it. Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures may get in touch with Garfield about becoming a part of Phase 6’s last stretch, if they haven’t already, given how Avengers: Secret Wars is supposed to set up a soft reboot of the MCU, which will probably see the merger of several timelines. After his spectacular press tour for Spider-Man: No Way Home, Garfield’s new statements might simply be him pretending again that he doesn’t know what is next for his Spider-Man while, in fact, he is likely already committed to something for the MCU. The world will have to wait and see whether or not they can see Garfield’s Spider-Man on a huge screen once again till then.
