Wade Wilson and Vanessa’s romance was a significant, if minor, aspect of Deadpool & Wolverine, raising concerns over why the two were not shown together for a longer period of time in the MCU movie. With a global box office total of $1.3 billion, Deadpool & Wolverine is one of Marvel’s biggest hits in recent memory. Nonetheless, Wade’s interactions with Morena Baccarin’s Vanessa delved into the emotional core of the first two Deadpool films. Recently, Baccarin has revealed why this was not a significant plot point in the most recent episode. Morena Baccarin discussed the differences between Deadpool 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine in a recent interview with The Playlist’s The Discourse podcast, where she was promoting her upcoming thriller Elevation starring Anthony Mackie. She began by making a joke about the most recent episode, stating, “Yeah, I was hardly onset.” That was the main distinction. She then discussed the changes that occurred throughout production, both in front of and behind the camera, in a little more depth. The new movie’s production and acquisition by Disney and Marvel significantly altered its direction. “You have to remember the first film was essentially an independent, big-budget film, relatively speaking,” Baccarin stated. The decision to switch to Disney meant that procedures would follow those of the bigger studio. Instead of a smaller, more personal romance narrative, this resulted in a massive, multiverse-hopping tale.
“Yeah, I was hardly onset. That was the big difference. No, I’m kidding. It was a huge film in general. You know, Marvel is a big studio and they do things a certain way. So it did feel very different from the others. I mean, you have to remember the first film was essentially an independent, big-budget film, relatively speaking. But not at the scale of what it is now. And we were making this film that was a little odd – like it was our sense of humor, but are other people going to think it’s funny? So it felt very, very different and very indie at the time, actually.“
In his remarks, Baccarin discusses Disney’s current situation and how the movie was envisioned to be a box office monster. The perspective had to be different by necessity because Deadpool & Wolverine had a ton of appearances and a massive tale that stretched throughout the cosmos. As a consequence, the film seemed more like the next chapter in Marvel’s Multiverse Saga than Deadpool 3. Despite the fact that some of the more personal aspects from the first two films were sacrificed, this was obviously a hit for the company. Wade obviously still values Vanessa, and her role in Deadpool & Wolverine served a significant narrative function. The film’s emotional triumph was greatly aided by Deadpool and Vanessa’s finale. Although Morena Baccarin’s involvement was conceptually significant and poignant, it would have been lovely to see more of her in the movie. Baccarin’s performance, albeit in a supporting part, was crucial to the movie’s success.
