Anthony Mackie explains how Sam Wilson is a different Captain America since he doesn’t have Super-Soldier serum.

Anthony Mackie’s explanation of how his lack of the MCU’s Super-Soldier Serum makes him a unique Captain America has made Captain America: Brave New World even more thrilling. At the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame, Sam Wilson was given the shield and mantle, but it was painfully clear that he lacked the superhuman powers bestowed by the Super-Soldier Serum, which were a hallmark of his predecessor. This made many wonder why Cap didn’t pick Bucky to succeed him as his longest friend with comparable abilities, but I genuinely believe Steve made the correct decision. I believe Sam Wilson is deserving of a great deal of praise because he is one of the most strong non-superpowered characters in the MCU. He has demonstrated that he possesses the courage required to assume the role of Captain America by flying straight into even more formidable foes like Thanos and his army. Wilson is an underdog in comparison to his predecessor and many of his opponents, a position that Captain America: Brave New World seems ready to take advantage of.

In an interview with Deadline, Anthony Mackie discussed Sam Wilson’s absence of Super-Soldier Serum, ostensibly revealing that Wilson had not been given any in the years before Brave New World. In addition to confirming that Sam Wilson is a lot more strategic fighter than someone who overwhelms his opponents with force, he goes into detail about how Wilson overcomes his superhuman deficiencies. I believe this is what makes him so fascinating. The following is his whole statement:

“With the serum, it’s completely different—you can battle anyone.” You must be cunning and devise new strategies to beat enemy when you lack the serum. As a psychotherapist, Sam employs more mental skills than physical ones. His mind is more useful than his fist. He treats everyone more like a friend.

Even though his firepower is much reduced, Sam Wilson’s preference for intelligence over strength places him in a comparable position and compares him to more tactical MCU characters like Iron Man. Only Iron Man’s Hulkbuster armor, which was likely his most potent suit prior to using nanotechnology, allowed him to compete on an equal basis with the Hulk. It appears that Sam Wilson lacks access to a comparable Hulkbuster, so he will have to plan ahead to the point that his battle with the Red Hulk is even more interesting. Although there have been hints that Captain America: Brave New World would have a similar tone as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, I find it difficult to accept this when the Red Hulk is present. Instead, Captain America: Brave New World trailers promise spectacles more akin to those in Captain America: Civil War, which I wholeheartedly support. Anthony Mackie has already acknowledged that the film would go off-piste in one very obvious way: “It’s very different with the serum.” This reality will always influence Sam’s approach to difficulties. Steve Rogers is shown as a master of his craft throughout the MCU, and the adversaries find him to be a formidable foe because to his exceptional strength, speed, and durability. For instance, it is difficult to think that Sam Wilson, who was imprisoned in an elevator with many HYDRA operatives, would emerge as unharmed as Steve Rogers. Sam is also unlikely to grab a landing skid and cling to a rail in order to ground a helicopter.

However, it’s simple to see Sam accomplishing similar things in a different way. Therefore, I’m confident that the film will focus on the fact that Sam Wilson needs to put in a lot more effort to accomplish the same outcomes as his predecessor. After all, this is hinted to in the trailer’s exchange between President Ross and Captain America, in which Ross says, “You’re not Steve Rogers,” to which Sam boldly responds, “You’re right.” I’m not. The famous elevator scenario comes to mind once more, as Steve quickly recognized the circumstance he was in before confronting it head-on. He calmly obtained Loki’s Scepter during the time heist in Avengers: Endgame by tricking Jasper Sitwell into believing he was also a HYDRA operative, which was another brilliant scene in an elevator. In his battle with Bucky, he was able to use his blows to protect him from being seriously hurt. Then there are the innumerable instances where Steve scans the battlefield and plans his moves appropriately, consistently demonstrating his ability to guide the Avengers. Sam Wilson will also be in his element here, in my opinion. As previously stated, Steve’s choice to leave Sam the shield was undoubtedly influenced more by their commonalities—such as their sharp minds—than by their superpowers. This demonstrates how these elements were always more crucial to Captain America’s duty than any physical prowess. It also suggests that these flashes of genius will be repeated in Captain America: Brave New World to demonstrate Sam’s deservingness of the shield.
