At the time of its premiere, Sony’s Kraven the Hunter tied the record for the lowest Rotten Tomatoes rating of any Marvel film in the Spider-Man Universe. After the Venom film trilogy, Madame Web, and Morbius, Kraven the Hunter is the sixth entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Kraven the Hunter presents live-action adaptations of comic book characters like Rhino, Chameleon, and Calypso, and also provides an origin narrative for one of Spider-Man’s most significant antagonists, despite the fact that it doesn’t include any Spider-Man. According to Rotten Tomatoes, Kraven the Hunter premiered with a Tomatometer score of 11% on December 11, 2024, and has since increased to 15%. Sony’s Madame Web has an 11% Tomatometer score as of Kraven the Hunter’s release, whereas Morbius has a 15% score. Madame Web is the first film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe to have a “rotten” audience score, yet only the Venom trilogy has earned a review score greater than 15%.
It was announced prior to the global release of Kraven the Hunter that Sony will not be creating any additional Spider-Man spinoffs in its Spider-Man Universe, preferring to concentrate on Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the Spider-Noir series, and the impending Spider-Man 4 in the MCU. Given how improbable it is that the franchise would change the minds of reviewers and viewers with new spinoffs, Kraven the Hunter’s premiere score on Rotten Tomatoes lends credibility to the SSU’s cancellation. The declining box office performance and reviews for Venom: The Last Dance also imply that Sony’s largest Marvel product isn’t perfect. The definite cancellation of previously announced projects, such as the Donald Glover-starring Hypno Hustler and the Bad Bunny vehicle El Muerto, seems inevitable given how Kraven the Hunter’s source material apparently isn’t enough to wow reviewers. Since Sony might no longer save Spider-Man-related characters for its own franchise, Marvel Studios might also have access to a greater range of Spider-Man adversaries for upcoming MCU sequels. It’s unclear if Sony’s Spider-Man Universe will ever be recognized by the MCU cosmos.
Kraven the Hunter replicates the same problems that many viewers had with earlier iterations of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, even if it does not follow the identical pattern from Morbius, Madame Web, or Venom. For the most of the film’s duration, Kraven the Hunter transforms the typically evil Kraven into an anti-hero; it doesn’t include Spider-Man in any way; and it doesn’t introduce anything novel to the superhero genre. It would have needed to be very different from films like Madame Web and Morbius if Kraven the Hunter had really been responsible for saving the SSU.
