Deadpool & Wolverine increased the film’s box office appeal by bringing back Hugh Jackman to co-star with Ryan Reynolds, even if the possibility of Deadpool returning for a third feature would have been enough to attract viewers. Marvel fans were shocked by Jackman’s choice to reprise his role as Wolverine, as he had played the character for 17 years before retiring. Reynolds, who co-wrote the movie, apparently was one of them. According to the actor’s interview with IndieWire, crafting “Wolverine dialogue was a terrifying process.” Reynolds used this chance to lavish his buddy and co-star Jackman with praise, focusing on a sequence in which Wolverine delivers Deadpool a harsh reality check:
“Hugh just gobbled up that diatribe. He provided it for us after chewing and swallowing it. Additionally, there is a stage direction at the bottom of the performance that states, in brief, that “a flicker of regret crosses his pupil” after he completes the entire speech. Additionally, if you watched the scenario, Hugh, you would have missed the smallest hint of “I went too far” if you had blinked. The actor was so in touch with both his instrument and himself that it gives me chills to think about it. I get to wear a mask as I sit there.
Shawn Levy, the director of the movie, also described how the writers arrived at the final cut of the now-famous monologue set inside a Honda Odyssey: “we just did version, version, and we spent hours until it somehow felt like Logan, but also expressed a dimension and a voice that we haven’t heard him speak in.” Reynolds went on to explain his writing process for Logan, characterizing him as “very Clint Eastwood.” Wolverine is a “less is more” type of character, he clarified. Reynolds also explained how these difficulties in creating Logan enabled the authors to determine why he wore his recognizable yellow costume. He said that “these are all problems the writers have to solve over and over again.” Reynolds then disclosed what he and Jackman discussed about the suit:
“We told Hugh right away, ‘You’ve got it, you must be wearing the yellow suit.'” We must also wait. You can’t just be put in there. When they see it, they will clap. They will adore it. However, we need to know why you’re wearing it. There must be a cause. In addition, the character is typically, at least in the core comic books, a man who is unable to manage his anger. He is insanely angry. He does more than simply murder villains. He also murders decent people when he is in that state. For him, that is akin to a disease. We described the costume as a hair shirt, a punishment, or something he wears out of embarrassment.
Despite their strong on-screen chemistry, Deadpool and Wolverine are quite different people. It follows that a writer more accustomed to crafting a story and language for Wade would need to modify their style for Logan. Apart from that, the plot seemed especially tailored for Logan since Wolverine’s rough demeanor was included into both his relationship with Deadpool and his inner reasons. Reynolds’ remarks show that the authors made an attempt to ensure that he spoke and acted in a way that was consistent with his character. Reynolds was successful in giving Logan a unique personality. Although he portrays a new version of Wolverine, Jackman’s performance in the movie effectively captures the intrigue and nostalgia of his earlier roles, making this multiversal version simple to support. Furthermore, because the authors rationalize Logan’s response, the scene between Deadpool and Wolverine in which Logan completely loses it on Wade feels natural despite deviating from the character’s usual behavior. Character-focused writing abounds in Deadpool & Wolverine, including the Honda Odyssey scene, which heightens the film’s emotional impact.
