The fact that one of Marvel’s greatest villain performances resulted from the actor not being chosen to play the first Captain America in the MCU still amazes me.

I was surprised to hear that one MCU actor almost played Captain America with Chris Evans, but I’m glad they weren’t since they delivered one of the greatest villain performances in Marvel’s whole history. Even though Chris Evans was well-known in 2011 thanks to his roles in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Fox’s Fantastic Four duology, his fame was still nothing in comparison to his present standing after playing Steve Rogers for eight years. Naturally, it’s difficult to see someone else in the position now. This is the case with Marvel Studios, which has consistently demonstrated its ability to choose the most qualified actors for MCU films. Due to the franchise’s insurmountability, several actors have begun to voice their regrettable rejections and lost opportunities. But in the instance of one in particular, losing out on one of Marvel’s most prominent parts made room for another, which was definitely for the best even if it was arguably far more small.

In Daredevil, Wilson Bethel plays Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter. Unlike Colin Farrel’s portrayal in 2003’s Daredevil, Daredevil shows the entire scope of Dex’s origin story, from his traumatic childhood to his genesis as one of Matt Murdock’s most formidable adversaries. Bullseye is not a one-note villain, even if he works for Fisk as a private assassin sent to destroy Daredevil’s reputation. Bethel portrays a complex, emotionally wounded monster with very amazing skill. Like many Marvel villains, Poindexter still manages to elicit some sympathy despite having been reared in a dysfunctional system and coming from a shattered family. However, he is shown to be more erratic than others, displaying traits similar to pure psychopathy as he is unable to control his darker impulses and becomes fatally fixated with his former coworker, Julie. A striking image of Poindexter with bullseyes mirrored in his eyes is shown to us during the Daredevil series finale, suggesting that he had finally come to accept his villainy as a result of his mistreatment and loss at the hands of Kingpin and Daredevil.

Seven years after Steve Rogers’ big-screen debut in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), Bethel’s Bullseye makes his debut in the third season of Daredevil, which premiered in October 2018. Daredevil’s status as an MCU canon was up for debate at the moment and was only finally decided in March 2024. This came after Marvel Studios Head of Streaming Brad Winderbaum stated that Disney has included the Defenders Saga in its official MCU timeline on Disney+. As a result, Bethel’s Dex and every other Daredevil character are now formally a part of the MCU and will make a comeback in Daredevil: Born Again.

While it may have pained Bethel initially, I think we can all agree that the preferable casting decisions won out in the end.

If Bethel’s original option had worked out, this might not have been the case. Bethel revealed during a recent Fan Expo event that he had tried out for the MCU’s Steve Rogers at first, even going quite far in the process before Marvel Studios decided on Chris Evans. Before his agent gave him the crucial information, Bethel acknowledged that he had gone through many screen tests and had put on the outfit. Even if Bethel might have been upset at first, I think we can all agree that the better casting choices ultimately prevailed. The complete quotation from Bethel is as follows:

“I almost got cast as Captain America, which was the toughest blow I ever received. I tested the suit on a number of screens, and it felt fantastic. Yes, when asked if he had any photos. I felt like I was getting the part because of all these things that were going on. At one point, I recall my agent contacting me and saying, “No, actually, they offered it to Chris Evans,” or something like.

Not surprisingly, the same television show that brought us the iconic live-action Kingpin is also responsible for giving a very horrible Marvel Comics villain far more nuance. Because of his severe mental illness and horrific background, Poindexter is one of Marvel’s most scary villains to date. I’m glad Daredevil didn’t kill him off, instead setting the stage for the character to return in his most menacing form in Daredevil: Born Again. I’m excited about the impending TV-MA-rated sequel series when I combine this with Muse’s unavoidably horrific premiere. In my opinion, Bullseye could have established a standard that Daredevil: Born Again now needs to surpass. Even though Vicent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk and Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock have previously given MCU viewers well-developed retorts, I can’t help but think that Bethel’s portrayal will surpass their parts in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Echo. When Daredevil: Born Again eventually premieres on March 4, I’m excited to see how Bullseye’s mental state has been impacted by Daredevil’s experiences and how he will engage with the macabre Muse.
