Marvel addresses Fantastic Four movie poster AI accusations after social media backlash

The Fantastic Four: First Steps poster, which was unveiled soon after the first official teaser for the MCU film, refutes claims of artificial intelligence. One of Marvel’s most eagerly awaited 2025 projects is Matt Shakman’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which will debut a whole new iteration of Marvel’s First Family. Given that it introduces an alternate reality that might play a significant role in Phase 6 of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, the first film starring the Fantastic Four will likely be crucial to the Multiverse Saga as well. The first teaser and promotional poster for The Fantastic Four: First Steps were published by Marvel Studios on February 4, 2025. The latter features a group of people who appear to be celebrating the team’s space shuttle trip. Social media responses highlighted some flaws in the poster as soon as it was made public. For instance, a woman’s face appears twice in the crowd, and a hand holding a flag on the poster’s left side looks to have just four fingers. Consequently, some social media users have accused Marvel Studios of employing artificial intelligence to create the poster for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The controversy was quickly addressed by Marvel Studios. Marvel assured TheWrap that the “prepare 4 launch” crowd poster for The Fantastic Four: First Steps did not involve artificial intelligence. The use of AI in the opening credits of Marvel’s Secret Invasion has already drawn criticism, while non-MCU films such as Brady Cobert’s The Brutalist have also been attacked for employing AI technologies to improve specific areas of the filmmaking process.

Counting the fingers on persons’ hands and searching for additional fingers or odd hand shapes is one popular technique to identify AI usage in images. But having an odd number of fingers isn’t indisputable evidence of artificial intelligence. Repeated faces in crowds are much more prone to this type of inaccuracy than normal picture compositing. The “Prepare 4 Launch” poster from The Fantastic Four: First Steps has a lot of moving components inside the frame and mimics the fashion and photography of the 1960s. All of the quickly moving flags, placards, and confetti must be modified to create an eye-catching impression, which may result in some minor irregularities. When the first official poster for Thunderbolts* was revealed, Marvel faced similar criticism. Lewis Pullman’s Bob in that poster initially gave the impression of having six fingers, which sparked internet accusations of AI use. That was really an optical illusion, though, since Bob’s pinky, ring, and middle fingers all perfectly overlap at the image’s edge, giving the impression that there is an additional finger off-screen. The title sequence for Secret Invasion was made by Marvel using artificial intelligence. Since then, fans could be more likely to blame AI for visual faults. The “Prepare 4 Launch” poster flaws in The Fantastic Four: First Steps appear to be real picture editing issues unrelated to AI use. AI is even less likely to be used in the film itself, and several aspects in the debut teaser for The Fantastic Four: debut Steps indicate that Marvel is paying close attention to detail. The Thing’s look, for example, is both realistic and remarkably true to the books, and each hero’s abilities exhibit subtle environmental effects: the Invisible Woman’s force fields produce rainbow-like chromatic distortion on the camera, while the Human Torch’s flames reflect dust. However, Marvel Studios might need to exercise greater caution when it comes to posters like “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.”
