For the first time since Avengers: Endgame, the original MCU superhero team will be reunited in 2026 when the Avengers make their big-screen comeback in Avengers: Doomsday. The Russo Brothers’ return to the MCU with Avengers: Doomsday is expected to be a crossover event of unparalleled scale, despite the lack of specific plot details at this time. It could feature hundreds of incredibly strong villains battling against the largest hero lineup ever assembled in the MCU timeline in a single project. Blood will be shed; that much is certain. However, Jonathan Majors’ legal issues caused issues for Avengers: Doomsday since on December 18, 2023, Majors was found guilty of two minor charges of assault and harassment. Reports surfaced shortly after that the MCU had severed its relationship with the actor, and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty would now be known as Avengers 5 for the time being. Months later, the new title, Avengers: Doomsday, was revealed.
The Avengers will require all the assistance they can get, which is probably going to involve at least one former Guardian of the Galaxy member, the Legendary Star-Lord, given the ostensibly enormous universe stakes in Avengers: Doomsday. Chris Pratt was evasive when he was asked if Star-Lord will make a cameo in Avengers: Doomsday during a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, but based on Pratt’s response, it now seems virtually a given that he will. His response is as follows:
“There was a promise that The Legendary Star-Lord would return… we will make good on that promise!”
The final time we saw Star-Lord was in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, when he was reunited with his grandpa and made his way back to Earth under his own circumstances. Fans have been wondering when he will truly return to the MCU, as the film ended with the promise that he will. That seems like the ideal location for him to execute it, especially with Avengers: Doomsday approaching.
Originally scheduled for May 2, 2025, Marvel moved the release date of Avengers: Doomsday to May 1, 2026. The film appears to be a direct sequel to The Fantastic Four’s debut at the beginning of the MCU’s Phase 6 based on the story’s focus on that of iconic Fantastic Four nemesis Doctor Doom. However, since Blade was taken off Marvel Studios’ release schedule, it’s possible that another movie will take its place in late 2025.
Avengers: Doomsday now includes a key confirmed character in the shape of Doctor Doom, who was revealed to be included in the next film at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, thus the title. The casting for Doctor Doom was also revealed, and Robert Downey Jr., the legendary MCU Iron Man actor, will be making a comeback to the film’s world in this new role. Since he has already been an antagonist in one of the comic versions of this story, bringing in Doctor Doom seems like a wonderful way to introduce the Secret Wars plot. The Fantastic Four will be part of the ensemble of Avengers: Doomsday, and it looks like Doctor Doom will make his feature debut in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, according to statements made at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con. The Thunderbolts* cast will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, which will include, among other things, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, and Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova. This was confirmed at the Marvel panel.
A few MCU characters, like as Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter, and Chris Evans in an unspecified capacity, are expected to make a comeback with the two superhero teams and Downey Jr. as Doomsday. Benedict Cumberbatch has stated that he will reprise his role as Doctor Strange following a series of back-and-forth interviews. Despite not being formally announced, Chris Pratt’s recent remarks suggest that Star-Lord will probably return as well. Jokingly discussing Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom and what it meant for whoever would be joining that movie from earlier MCU films, Anthony Mackie shared the following in an interview with Nerdbunker:
Robert Downey Jr. has had his ass-kick coming for a long time, and I’m very proud to say he is going to get it!
Naturally, a large number of MCU characters will probably return, considering the scope of what to anticipate from Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Characters like Ant-Man, Shang-Chi, Captain Marvel, Hulk, Spider-Man, and Thor may and probably will make a comeback, despite the fact that nothing has been formally announced. Even if they haven’t been seen in a long time or have only made a few appearances, any past MCU character might make a comeback for Avengers: Doomsday given the multiversal scope of the next movies.
Five years after the Multiverse Saga began with WandaVision in 2021, Avengers: Doomsday will be published. This is roughly half the time it took for the MCU’s Infinity Saga to build up to Avengers: Infinity War following the release of Iron Man in 2008. Similar to Infinity War to Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Doomsday appears to be the first of two Avengers movies, with Avengers: Secret Wars, the second installment, scheduled for 2027. Doomsday and Secret Wars have the opportunity to wrap up the second major MCU Saga in a spectacular way, leveraging the multiverse concept to bring in the largest cast of characters the MCU has ever seen from decades of adaptations. The Multiverse Saga has had its share of ups and downs throughout. Despite being the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga, Avengers: Doomsday is probably going to help establish the foundation for the future direction of the MCU.
