I’m having Maria Hill flashbacks from Daredevil: Born Again’s major death, and I sincerely hope Marvel doesn’t make the same mistake twice.

After seeing Daredevil: Born Again, I’m having a lot of Maria Hill flashbacks, and I’m terrified that the MCU will make the same mistakes that Secret Invasion did. Charlie Cox’s character Matt Murdock returned for a solo adventure in Daredevil: Born Again, which debuted on March 4, following teasers and cameos in a number of recent MCU movies. The first few minutes of episode 1, “Heaven’s Half Hour,” left me concerned about how one significant character’s tragic fate would be handled, but I still thought Born Again’s double debut was thrilling. After making appearances in Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Echo, Charlie Cox made a comeback in Daredevil: Born Again. However, from the very beginning of the series’ premiere, Born Again was already far more dramatic, aggressive, and emotionally raw than any of Matt Murdock’s other experiences. The fact that Daredevil: Born Again replicated a significant scene from 2023’s Secret Invasion caught me off guard, and I sincerely hope Marvel Studios doesn’t make the same mistakes they did with the Phase 5 series two years later.

In the first episode of 2023’s Secret Invasion, “Resurrection,” the Skrull Gravik assassinated Maria Hill, a beloved former SHIELD agent and MCU veteran, immediately after he set off bombs in Vossoyedineniye Square on Unity Day. I was stunned to see Cobie Smulders die in the premiere of Secret Invasion since she was a beloved character in the MCU, and Marvel has just increased my astonishment. While the premiere of Secret Invasion concluded with a significant death, the first episode of Daredevil: Born Again began with a fatality involving Elden Henson’s character, Foggy Nelson. Following the 2023 creative reworking of Daredevil: Born Again, it was reported that Elden Henson will be returning to his role as Franklin “Foggy” Nelson from Netflix’s Daredevil series. I couldn’t believe Marvel Studios murdered him dead in the first fifteen minutes of Born Again, even though I was thrilled to see him back as Matt Murdock’s best friend and legal partner. Bullseye murdered Foggy, and Wilson Bethel played the same part again. Deborah Ann Woll gave a moving performance as Foggy passed away in Karen Page’s arms. All I can hope is that Marvel doesn’t waste this significant death.

The way Marvel Studios handled Maria Hill’s death in Secret Invasion still bothers me a lot. Her death ought to have greatly influenced Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, who was inspired to put an end to the Skrull uprising, murder Gravik, and then stay on Earth to eliminate any Gravik supporters and protect the planet. But Marvel rendered Maria Hill’s passing all but pointless. Fury essentially played no role in putting a stop to the Skrull insurrection and paid no respect to Hill at all, sending G’iah to face Gravik in his stead before he just left Earth once more. I fervently hope that Marvel Studios doesn’t follow this terrible pattern with Daredevil: Born Again’s Foggy Nelson. Matt Murdock must be profoundly affected by Foggy’s passing, and this effect must last throughout the series and any subsequent plots in which Daredevil finds himself. Since Foggy and Matt had been friends since college, it is impossible to forget the former’s passing. Murdock has already retired as Daredevil as a result of Foggy’s death, but as he will shortly wear the horns once more, his every choice must take Foggy’s passing into consideration.

I expect that Foggy’s loss will be far more prevalent in Born Again than Maria Hill’s was in Secret Invasion, especially in light of Daredevil: Born Again’s double premiere and how it handled his death. I still hope Smulder’s MCU veteran receives atonement, even though this doesn’t address Marvel’s errors with Maria Hill. Maria Hill might be redeemed by Marvel in a number of ways, either by just honoring her more than Secret Invasion did or by reintroducing her into the MCU. Given how far along the Multiverse Saga is, it would be easy for the MCU to introduce a different Maria Hill, maybe one who would take up her SHIELD Director position from Marvel Comics. Although it isn’t regarded as canon to the MCU’s main timeline, Nick Fury has previously done this with Phil Coulson in Agents of SHIELD, and Maria Hill’s death may also be reversed by some Marvel magic. This has happened several times in the Defenders Saga. Like I’m sure Foggy Nelson will in Daredevil: Born Again, I hope Maria Hill receives some justice in the MCU, regardless of the case.
