A “Black Panther” spinoff series based on Danai Gurira’s character, Okoye, may be created in the future, she said.
A 2021 article in The Hollywood Reporter said that Gurira’s attorney has arranged for the “Walking Dead” star to play the Wakandan warrior in a spinoff series for Disney+. But no formal statement has been made since then.
When she appeared on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” Thursday, Gurira said: “I have been told that I can gently allude to this possibility so I am gently alluding. Just gently.”
In an earlier portion of the interview, Gurira claimed that Okoye’s journey in the most recent Marvel film, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” first caught her off guard.
The Wakandan princess Shuri (Letitia Wright) is taken by an enemy while Okoye is keeping watch over her, and as a result, Okoye loses her position as commander of the Dora Milaje, an elite warrior force, and is expelled from the army.
As for Okoye’s voyage, Gurira said: “Trust me, when I first heard the script [and] when Ryan sat me down and told me what happens, that I’m fired and all the rest, I was like, ‘Woah, woah, woah. Let’s discuss this.’ But then I realized how powerful it would be to actually allow a character like her to go through failing and complications that cause her to not be able to just stand strong and hold everything together.”
She said: “She has to go through her brokenness too.”
According to the Okoye actress, Black women directly informed her that they “liked witnessing her weakness” and her anguish since it differed from the “strong Black woman” archetype in movies after the movie came out.
Black women are frequently portrayed in media as fierce protectors of other characters and are rarely given the opportunity to express their emotions. The main protagonists in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” the majority of whom are Black women, are seen going through the grief process.
