Thunderbolts will be “like a Black Widow sequel,” according to Marvel Studios’ Director of Visual Development Andy Park, who is promoting the new book The Art of Black Widow. Given that the new MCU cast will include some members of Phase 4’s Black Widow, even if Scarlett Johansson’s original Black Widow is no longer a part of the series, the information is probably not all that shocking. Natasha Romanoff looks to be one of the characters in the Marvel universe who will never return, but she continues to live on through her sister Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), who is carrying on her heritage.
Along with Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) and Red Guardian (David Harbour), Yelena will be joined in Thunderbolts by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), who will reprise her greatest MCU role to date. In order to do this, the Thunderbolts will clarify Andy Park’s remarks and reintroduce the Black Widow cast as a whole. Park stated in a post on Instagram to advertise the book:
“Here’s the back cover portion for the wraparound cover I got to illustrate for THE ART OF BLACK WIDOW! Get your copy today! Taskmaster, the Red Guardian, Yelena AND Valentina Allegra de Fontaine will be returning in the upcoming THUNDERBOLTS film. It’s like it’s a Black Widow sequel & these these movies are connected or something! 😉 It’s gonna get interesting”

In Thunderbolts, Marvel’s response to The Suicide Squad, the aforementioned Black Widow characters will be joined by Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell). The gang will come together and likely be accountable to either Louis-Dreyfus’ Val or Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who will be portrayed by Harrison Ford in the MCU after William Hurt’s passing. Ayo Edebiri was just added to the cast in an unnamed role, and there will probably be more casting announcements in the weeks leading up to production.
Very little is known about the motivation for the formation of the squad in the film or how it will integrate into the main MCU narrative. Even so, the movie has a lot to look forward to, and David Harbour has already said how happy he is to be joining the franchise again. Previously, he stated:
“It’s really cool. We introduce a thing that’s super cool. It’s vital. I’m psyched that Julia Louis Dreyfus’ character is going to be, in a bigger way, explored. One of the things you’ll probably know is that me and Florence’s dynamic will be in there and explored in a way that’s really cool. But all these guys, Sebastian’s character, Wyatt’s character, I just love this mercenary element in the MCU. MCU has always been sort of elevated in a certain way. It’s not what you’d expect. It incorporates a couple new elements, new things that we have yet to see in the universe.”
The blockbuster from 2021 was a lot of fun, and those characters surely merit a second appearance. But when fans think of the Thunderbolts, figures like Baron Zemo, Songbird, and even Luke Cage pop into their heads right away. The sole character from this squad with a shared past in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Ghost. It’s still too early to rule this one out, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens. There had been rumours recently that Ghost may have been cancelled, but we’ve now found that was untrue.
On July 26, 2024, Thunderbolts will be released in cinemas.
