According to a recent source, Dakota Johnson of the film Madame Web “is the template” for one of Marvel Studios’ most important parts that is now seeking for an actress. Marvel has had a number of superhero parts open in Hollywood since the Multiverse Saga began, including the Eternals, Fantastic Four, and others. This number will only increase as more actors are sought after for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Having gotten her big break with her leading role in the wicked Fifty Shade trilogy, actress Dakota Johnson recently entered the superhero game with her appointment as Madame Web in Sony’s 2024 Spider-Man spin-off. Together with Sydney Sweeney, Adam Scott, and others, Johnson will star as the clairvoyant Cassandra Webb in the upcoming Madame Web film. Set images have unveiled a beautiful glimpse of her superhero movie outfit.
Marvel Finds Its Next Great Superhero in Dakota Johnson
Jeff Sneider of Above the Line claimed on The Hot Mic Podcast that Dakota Johnson, who starred in Fifty Shades of Grey and Madame Web, “is the template” for the Sue Storm character cast by Marvel Studios in the Fantastic Four movie. The well-known insider pointed out that Marvel Studios is looking for a Johnson-type in the “30-35 age bracket,” and that famous fan favourite Saoirse Ronan, who is 28 years old, may be “a bit too young” for that.
“… As for the Fantastic Four, I mean… When we were discussing her age… Age of Sue Storm… and declared that they would begin to construct around Sue Storm. Saoirse [Ronan] was then mentioned, and someone came forward to say that she appears to be a little too young. We’re looking at people in the 30- to 35-year-old range, and Dakota Johnson, from what I understand, is the ideal.”
The information comes in the wake of rumours that Sneider appears to support, according to which Marvel Studios intends to cast the Invisible Woman first and assemble the rest of the crew around her. The casting process is reportedly “gearing up” at the studio this month in anticipation of a rumoured early 2024 production schedule. Nevertheless, due to her attention being on Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off Madame Web, Sneider emphasised “it’s not… going to be Dakota Johnson.” The insider further clarified that they are “not necessarily” searching for a white woman, despite Johnson’s motivation for the casting being that colour:
“Dakota Johnson will obviously not be playing the role because she is Madame Web, which is reportedly also currently having new footage shot. So, Dakota Johnson won’t be playing the role. Does the fact that Dakota Johnson is 32 indicate that they are looking at a white woman? No, not always. However, I believe that in a perfect world, they would prefer someone like Dakota Johnson.“
One can only speculate as to whether the star of Fantastic Four may wish she had passed on Madame Web and waited out for a superhero part at Marvel Studios instead given the quest for an actress in the Dakota Johnson mould for the film. Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has a history of underwhelming box office performance and underwhelming critical acclaim, but perhaps this year will be the year that the curse is finally broken.It seems like Johnson loved her time working on Madame Web because she described it as “a crazy experience” and “a whole different method of creating films” than she is used to. The critical and financial reception of Madame Web will probably determine if Johnson and her co-stars have a future in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe beyond that. It’s not entirely obvious what the description of a Dakota Johnson-type actress implies, especially since Sneider made it plain that the search is not just for white women. The “30-35 age range” is certainly the most exciting part of this information; it will probably also apply to Reed Richards and Ben Grimm, with Johnny Storm perhaps going younger.
The Fantastic Four movie is scheduled to premiere on February 14, 2025.
