Anthony Mackie’s most recent Captain America roles get new looks from Disney

Spread MCU News

Behind-the-scenes video of Anthony Mackie’s most recent performance as Captain America was featured in a recent Disney documentary. Sam Wilson hasn’t appeared much in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since he formally took the role of Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been using the shield, despite his absence from Disney+ and the big screen.

Building the Wish: Disney’s Newest Cruise Ship, a National Geographic documentary that debuted on Disney+ on February 17, had a section that showed Anthony Mackie recording his most recent Captain America performance.

At Avengers: Quantum Encounter, a cinematic Marvel dinner performance presented at The Worlds of Marvel restaurant on board Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Wish, a number of Marvel actors, including Anthony Mackie, reprised their MCU roles.

To aid Ant-Man, the Wasp, Captain Marvel, and Ms. Marvel in stopping Ultron’s pursuit of the brand-new Pym Tech known as Quantum Cores, Cap shows up aboard the Disney Wish cruise ship.

In a previous interview, Disney Imagineer Danny Handke noted that while other Marvel actors were recorded in different cities around the world, “Anthony [Mackie] was shot in Los Angeles”:

Paul and Evangeline were filmed when they were preparing for the filming of “Quantumania,” and Anthony was filmed in Los Angeles after that. He came over to play with us and film with us after spending an extra day here for the Avengers campus launch. Anthony is the result. Oh, yes, everyone was photographed individually, and then we just needed to gather them together.

Mackie is seen filming numerous scenes for the programme while donning his full physical Captain America outfit in the documentary. In other pictures, he is shown with the renowned Captain America shield.

The Creating the Disney Wish crew spent “three days recording the behind-the-scenes of the ‘Avengers: Quantum Encounter’ presentation,” according to Bethany Jones, writer and producer, but only “one day with Captain America:”

“We filmed the “Avengers: Quantum Encounter” behind-the-scenes show for the Worlds of Marvel restaurant over the course of three days. It took two days to film certain stunt sequences and the seagull’s cameo appearance, which is larger than life in the final dinner movie, in addition to one day with Captain America. Filming for the other Marvel stars took place at a different hour.”

It’s uncommon to witness a Marvel actor acting on-set as their MCU character because of Marvel Studios’ reputation for secrecy, something Mackie himself has highlighted. Creating the Disney Wish is one of the first non-Marvel projects to do so, while Marvel’s own documentaries have in the past, such as Marvel Studios: Assembled.

The actor’s appearance was one of the first moments that Chad Cohen’s crew filmed and required “a lot of approvals,” according to the director, writer, and producer of Making the Disney Wish.

“We didn’t really know what it was or how it would come together since the Anthony Mackie behind-the-scenes filming for The Worlds of Marvel Restaurant was scheduled for a few weeks after we started. Really nice. Imagine if you are unable to just show up with a camera and record everything. There are several permissions, items, and signatures that must be obtained.”

The documentary goes a step further by presenting the show’s animatics of Cap fighting Ultron bots on the ship’s upper decks, in addition to Mackie dressed as the character and acting in front of a green screen.

While it’s doubtful that Captain America: New World Order’s hero will be engaged in combat aboard a cruise ship, these scenes do offer a sneak peek at what’s to come.

Although Anthony Mackie’s cameo as Captain America in Avengers: Quantum Encounter may be his most recent, it’s not his only one. He also appeared in costume to launch Avengers Campus at the Disneyland Resort in addition to starring in a Hyundai commercial with a Marvel theme. Although though his appearances at theme parks and on cruise ships are for Disney’s own Multiverse storyline rather than the MCU, these cameos are useful in establishing his character’s new function in the eyes of the fans before he returns to the big screen. As a result, Captain America 4 will be able to begin its story straight away with Sam Wilson firmly established as the next Star Spangled Man.

On May 3, 2024, Captain America: New World Order hits theatres.
