Marvel producer discusses multiverse rules in the MCU

Marvel Studios has been delving deep into the concept of the Multiverse lately, with the idea first introduced in Avengers: Endgame, and explored further in the Disney+ series Loki and the upcoming film Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. The Multiverse is a complex concept, and to keep everything straight, the Marvel team has regular meetings to discuss its rules and how to be logically consistent within the universe.

In a recent interview on the D23 Inside Disney podcast, Stephen Broussard, producer of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, shed some light on how Marvel Studios stays on top of their Multiverse rules. He noted that the meetings are about being logically consistent within the universe, rather than being scientifically consistent. While the films and shows may not always stick to rules that hold scientific water, they are staying true to the Marvel universe.

When it comes to making the Multiverse believable in various projects, Broussard compares their success level with that of a “magic trick.” The job of the movie is to not pay attention to the rules or how they’re getting there, but to focus on emotional satisfaction and storytelling. As long as the story resonates with audiences and feels like it holds water for the universe at large, the audience will go along with it.

The Multiverse is a constantly evolving concept in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially now that time travel has been woven into it. The company has weekly meetings about the concept, given that both Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars are in the writing stages. Fans can expect to see more Multiversal adventures in the near future, with Loki’s Season 2 set for release this Summer and Deadpool 3 heavily rumored to involve the Multiverse.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is also set to arrive in May 2023, though it’s unclear whether the film will touch upon the Multiverse. The Marvels’ involvement with the Multiverse is unknown, but Kamala Khan’s bangle is rumored to be a key part of the next few phases.

Overall, Marvel Studios is working hard to keep the Multiverse concept logically consistent within the universe, and the success of their Multiversal adventures ultimately depends on emotional satisfaction and storytelling rather than strict adherence to scientific rules. With exciting projects like Deadpool 3 and Loki’s Season 2 on the horizon, fans can look forward to more Multiversal adventures in the years to come.
