Like its predecessor, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse grows the ensemble of arachnid-themed heroes by adding new multiversal characters, broadening the experience of Miles Morales’ in terms of scope, style, and, at times, genre. One of them is Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk of Earth-138, a disobedient rocker who fights against a fascist government with his electric guitar. Hobie, a relatively new addition to the Spider-Man universe, has nonetheless won over fans with his distinctive appearance, intriguing past, and allusions to one of rock and roll’s most significant subgenres. Oscar-winning actor Daniel Kaluuya, who updates the part with his Camden dialects and adds a laid-back charm and swagger that makes the character one of the movie’s standouts, was hired by Across the Spider-Verse to voice the character. Despite having a limited role in the film, Spider-Punk’s appearance in Across the Spider-Verse creates a lasting effect and prepares the audience for his heroic entrance in the third installment.

Daniel Kaluuya began his acting career in his home London before moving on to Across the Spider-Verse. He has significant parts in British TV shows including Skins, Psychoville, and Black Mirror’s second episode, “Fifteen Million Merits.” His breakthrough role as Chris Washington in Jordan Peele’s first feature film, Get Out, occurred the following year. Both of them were propelled to new heights of fame by the movie, which also brought Kaluuya and Peele nominations for Academy Awards for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay, respectively.

From then, Kaluuya appeared in films including Widows, Queen & Slim, and Black Panther. He received widespread praise for his role as activist Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah, which helped him win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 2021. While Kaluuya frequently employs an American accent in his current roles, he speaks naturally in Camden when he voices Spider-Punk in Across the Spider-Verse, which pays homage to London’s impact on the punk culture. In a BBC Radio 1 interview, Kaluuya claimed the part was “literally a dream” for him and that co-director Kemp Powers pushed him to “bring everything you can to it.”

Who Is Spider-Punk?

In a short tale by Dan Slott and Olivier Coipel that appeared in 2015’s Amazing Spider-Man #10, Spider-Punk makes his comic book debut. The narrative introduced readers to Hobie Brown, a homeless boy who acquires abilities from the bite of a spider irradiated by President Norman Osborn’s hazardous waste dumping (who, in the main Marvel reality, briefly served as the high-tech robber the Prowler before becoming Spider-Man’s friend). Spider-Punk led the citizens of New York in a rebellion against Osborn and his soldiers, adopting a rebellious appearance and an anti-authority mindset. The tyrant-in-chief was ultimately killed by being severed from his head with an electric guitar.

Readers found the character to be popular enough that Cody Ziglar and Justin Mason decided to make him the star of his own miniseries. The story, “Banned in DC,” saw Hobie collaborating with punkified versions of Captain America, the Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Ironheart, and Daredevil to destroy the Osborn Administration. The story was named after a track from Bad Brains’ self-titled first album. Following Saladin Ahmed, Ziglar would write Miles Morales: Spider-Man with Federico Vincenti providing the art.

The presence of Spider-Punk isn’t very strong in Across the Spider-Verse. He actually isn’t a member of Miguel O’Hara’s Spider Society because of his distrust of authority, and he escapes Nueva York before they turn on Miles. He still proves to be Gwen Stacy’s steadfast supporter, lending her a handmade interdimensional portal generator and supporting her defence of Miles in the movie’s climactic scenes. Hobie establishes himself as the multiverse’s hardest-rocking rebel, laying the groundwork for a devastating reprise in the upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
