The Secret Invasion honors a legendary comics death

Marvel Cinematic Universe fans are eager to watch how the landscape on Earth will change once Secret Invasion finally makes its premiere. After Thanos’ Blip, the rebuilding process has been gradual. There is no denying, though, that the world is extremely vulnerable, which is why Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury is still as concerned as ever. And there is little doubt that the impending conflict will have a devastating impact, as demonstrated by Maria Hill’s passing. But in the first act of Secret Invasion, there is still another fascinating death. Although many would argue that Hill’s death is more tragic because she wasn’t a fake Skrull, it does serve to launch the series in a major way and pay homage to a famous loss from the comic event.

Elektra was slain after taking Echo hostage for the malicious ninja clan in the Secret Invasion comic book build-up, which caused the Avengers and the Hand to believe there were spies in the camp. She revealed herself to be a Skrull, returning to its green body. After the Skrulls replaced important heroes, villains, and politicians, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes were concerned about who had penetrated who and where. Later, the Skrulls accelerated their invasion.

Elektra is not present in the Secret Invasion premiere right now. The death of special agent Everett Ross as Talos pursues him, however, is a significant kill. He turns out to be a Skrull, shocking Talos and Hill with the knowledge the alien has. They were aware that something was strange because of the shady terrorist attacks that were being planned. However, Skrull Ross’s passing indicates that the infiltration is occurring somewhere they are unaware of or unable to control. Given Ross’s prominence in the MCU as a result of his roles in the Black Panther films, this death does contribute to the overall effect because of the shock it causes as well as the information it provides.

Skrull Ross’s death reinforces the “trust no one” adage that runs throughout the comic book Skrull storylines. Fans are also speculating about the Skrull identity of Dermot Mulroney’s portrayal of the new U.S. President in Secret Invasion and James Rhodes. This type of guessing game is exactly what Marvel Studios wants to remind audiences that anybody can play. Gravik, the terrorist commander, murdering Hill in the end while wearing Fury’s skin only makes things worse. With this and Ross’s death from the Skrulls, Secret Invasion will keep viewers on edge as every scene is examined to determine who is human. After Elektra’s disclosure in the novels, the same result occurs.

The Skrull storage facility adds another layer to this. In the Secret Invasion books, every victim was held in stasis, while in the television series, some of the victims are being preserved while Skrull agents steal their memories. Viewers are left curious about who would try to find the actual Ross, what information was obtained on Wakanda’s vibranium, and how world security has been impacted. Given that Ross has many more secrets than Elektra does, this ultimately causes unrest at the top levels and sparks a flood of rumours about how vulnerable Earth actually is.
