Parental guidance for the series is given in some areas of Disney+ due to Secret Invasion’s more mature tone and content than earlier Marvel Cinematic Universe films. On the marketing materials for Secret Invasion, all of Marvel UK’s social media profiles have added “Parental Control Advised” cautions. These apply to videos and pictures shared on Twitter and Instagram. Although the Nick Fury-starring spy drama still has a PG-13 rating, it’s important to note that it’s not the first programme to get parental guidance in the UK. The first MCU series to receive a PG-16 rating in the UK was Moon Knight, which made its debut in 2021 and was known for its severe violence and darker themes.
Given that the subject of Secret Invasion primarily explores the effects of collapsed nations and migrants looking for both homes and sanctuary, Marvel Studios hasn’t shied away from bringing up some of the show’s more mature topics. When considering what kinds of shows to produce for Disney+, executive producer Jonathan Schwartz “came into my office a number of years ago with this idea of translating the great Secret Invasion storyline from the comics into a darker, grittier spy show, which we hadn’t done,” recalled Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. Ben Mendelsohn, who plays the Skrull Talos, had a similar opinion and insisted that the programme is more geared towards adults. This is one that adults will like. That is mental. I’m hoping it turns out to be one of their best efforts, he remarked.
Nick Fury is followed in Secret Invasion as he makes his way back to Earth after learning of a Skrull revolt. After becoming weary of the former S.H.I.E.L.D director’s assurances that they would find a new home, a terrorist group decided to take matters into their own hands by taking the identities of several important global leaders. Ali Selim, the filmmaker, assured fans that the actual storyline will be a stand-alone installment in the franchise, despite the fact that the story’s implications for the larger MCU may be enormous.
As Selim said, “I worked very hard with Jonathan Schwartz, Alana Williams, Kevin Feige, and Louis D’Esposito to ensure that this tale could stand alone and excite an audience in and of itself, because my wife she’s going to see the story and adore it. Despite this, the director stated that a few clues in the show’s last moments may hint at future endeavours. At the time of writing, it is still unclear what these threads are.
