A love letter to Carol Danvers: Kelly Thompson’s Captain Marvel finale

While many renowned artists have made their mark on Carol Danvers’ life, few have done it as brilliantly as writer extraordinaire Kelly Thompson. Sadly for fans, Thompson’s stint on Captain Marvel is coming to an end, even if the title character barely feels that way. In reality, Thompson’s fifty-first and last installment of her time-and-space-spanning epic has already prepared Carol for better things to come and ends with a love letter to the person she is at her core. Carol Danvers does her best to be honest about recent losses and how they have affected her at a modest church in New York City. It’s not nearly as simple as talking things out with strangers, as Thompson, Javier Pina, David Lopez, Yen Nitro, and VC’s Clayton Cowles demonstrate in Captain Marvel. Soon after breaking through the ceiling in a frantic attempt to escape her woes, Carol arrived on the planet of New Hala. Carol is greeted by her sister Lauri-El at the cemetery of the recently departed Binary, who extends her sincere sympathies. Even though it hurts for them both to accept it, Carol and Lauri both realise that things won’t get better any time soon, but that doesn’t mean they have to deal with their issues by alone.

While the conclusion of other big series frequently include action-packed fight scenes, Captain Marvel prioritises wrapping up the unique stories of its protagonists. Carol has the opportunity to meet the individuals she cares about the most, whether it be by coincidence or at a scheduled celebration. She is given the opportunity to examine what each of these individuals means to her personally, and she values that opportunity more than any action-packed journey. Thompson has pushed the limits of Carol Danvers’ abilities as well as her character during her tenure on the series. Carol’s status as a hero and a human was questioned at every turn, despite the shock of producing Binary and her terrible demise, the appearance of the Brood, otherworldly challenges, and unplanned time travel. She has received both praise and condemnation along the road, and her numerous interpersonal connections have changed and grown in ways that have made many wonder why she even started them in the first place. Thankfully, each and every one of these turning points merely helped to demonstrate that Carol no longer has to establish her credibility with anybody or conform to their idea of who she is.

As Carol herself acknowledges, all the different names and adjectives that have been used to characterise her are only accoutrements that draw attention to particular aspects of her personality. Regardless of what anybody may think, Captain Marvel is too complex to be described in such general or precise words. Like everyone else, Carol undergoes ongoing change and development, which she is just now learning to view as a benefit rather than a disadvantage. This does not imply that she will not always be the same Carol, but rather that she will always advance and discover new things about herself. Carol’s future has never looked better with that degree of introspection and such a profound method of being open to the world around her. She has not only successfully accepted both the best and worst parts of herself, but she has also earned enough respect to be chosen as the acting chairman of the Avengers. Although it is impossible to predict what Captain Marvel’s future may bring, the brilliant work displayed during Thompson’s run assures that the character is ready to confront whatever comes as a hero and a sympathetic human being.
