The Skrulls have a longer history with Nick Fury than fans thought

Despite The Marvels’ impending release, Secret Invasion on Disney+ is practically a Captain Marvel sequel. The show continues the storylines that were left unfinished about Nick Fury and the Skrulls’ search for a new home. Additionally, the episode makes clear that Nick Fury’s relationship with the Skrulls has a far longer history than many fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe may have anticipated. The Skrulls on a ship were abducted by Captain Marvel in the last scene of Captain Marvel, presumably so they might find a new home. However, Spider-Man: Far From Home’s conclusion made it clear that Talos and Soren returned to Earth in some manner. Additionally, it offered viewers their first look at the Skrull-inhabited station S.A.B.E.R. It is implied in Secret Invasion that Carol Danvers and the Skrulls aboard the ship were out looking for as many Skrull refugees as they could, rather than looking for a new location to reside. With the exception of those in Emperor Droge’s colony, which Talos casually mentions to Fury in the train compartment. In the last seconds of the show, it is revealed that Nick Fury really wed a Skrull.

Two years after Captain Marvel ended, in 1997, the episode begins with a flashback to Nick Fury and the Skrulls. Fury suggests that Skrulls like Talos and Soren assist him protect Earth at this discussion. He vowed to support them in finding a new residence in the interim. But even a few years after the events of Avengers: Endgame, he still hasn’t kept his word. Even yet, he gives the Skrulls a respectful forehead touch, as is customary for them, showing that he actually cares about them. Additionally, he meets a young Gravik who appears ready to join the conflict. Some of them should be unhappy with Fury and mankind as a whole since Hulk undid Thanos’ snap and Fury practically abandoned Earth.

Naturally, just like his relationship with the Skrulls, Fury’s abandonment may have a longer history. Fury could have abandoned the Skrulls to fend for themselves after Tony Stark and Thor arrived. He was working on acquiring the Avengers, his “midlife crisis spending” present. Fury spent a lot of time controlling these characters in the early MCU. This indicates that he probably disregarded the Skrulls and his commitment to them before anybody on Earth learned about an infinity stone.

Nick Fury appeared exclusively in the Avengers: Age of Ultron post-credits scene and Avengers: Endgame sequence. The man with the “good eye” on everything was nowhere to be found, despite the fact that he attended Tony Stark’s funeral and was stationed aboard S.A.B.E.R. The Skrulls and his wife were likely his main companions at that time, as fans may now presume. He could have resumed looking for a place for them to live. He could have just been checking up on the Skrulls he knew were on Earth to make sure they were alright. Even so, he was fighting with Maria Hill when Thanos first arrived on Earth. He may have disappeared, but his wife might not have. In either case, it implies that his grief and remorse following the Blip have more to do with failing the Skrulls than they do with failing Earth.

It’s unclear what Fury means when he states, “This is personal,” in the Secret Invasion teaser. It might be an allusion to Maria Hill’s slaying. However, because Skrulls are more than simply his obligation; they are also family, it can also be personal. Whatever S.A.B.E.R. performs, it probably serves some purpose connected to assisting him in keeping the promise he made to the Skrulls over thirty years ago. The Skrulls have been known to Fury for as long as anybody on Earth, but he has a much deeper relationship with them than any MCU fan could have imagined.
