According to Ali Selim, the director of the Marvel Cinematic Universe miniseries Secret Invasion, Samuel L. Jackson made a significant contribution to the creation of Nick Fury’s past. Jackson’s own experiences were used as a direct inspiration for the sequence in Secret Invasion Episode 2’s “Promises,” in which Fury recounts a childhood story with Talos (Ben Mendelsohn). It wasn’t on the page. It was [Jackson] giving us a tale, he claimed. He is extremely attached to Nick Fury in a manner that no writer could ever be. “We used things that were real for me as a person to give Nick Fury the kind of history that he has, to inform the story in a real way about, you know, how he wasn’t always this [powerful] or he does look at America in another kind of way,” Jackson continued.
Not only is Fury’s youth disclosed in “Promises,” but other previously hidden details about the spymaster’s history are also highlighted. The second installment of Secret Invasion also introduces Nick Fury’s wife, Priscilla (Charlayne Woodard), a brand-new MCU character. It’s unclear in “Promises” if Fury is aware that Priscilla is a Skrull with shape-shifting abilities, which Selim stated in a recent interview was a deliberate artistic decision. “He is aware in the script. It was also intriguing because perhaps he was unaware when we took the photo. We eventually altered it such that viewers wondered if the actor was aware of it or not, he said.
Whether or whether Priscilla ends up deceiving her husband about who she really is, Selim’s earlier remarks about Secret Invasion’s emphasis on Nick Fury’s personal life are consistent with her introduction. Jackson is particularly enthused about this portion of the play, according to the director, since it allows him to depict hitherto unrecognised sides of Fury’s persona. “Sam Jackson would say we knew the working part of Nick Fury, but we never knew anything about his personal life,” Selim said. “We were never aware of his demons.
