James Gunn reveals unfilmed Stan Lee cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, recently disclosed that he had created a cameo part in the screenplay for the late Stan Lee, Marvel’s co-creator. However, Lee died before he got the chance to shoot the appearance. Lee has become notorious for his blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameos in Marvel flicks, the most recent of which being in Avengers: Endgame.

In the director’s commentary for Guardians 3, Gunn noted that the screenplay had been prepared before to Lee’s death, and the cameo appearance was meant to be voiceover only, to save him from the trouble of flying to film. However, due to Gunn’s brief departure from Marvel, the project was placed on hold for a period of time. When production ultimately started, Gunn opted to take on the part himself, playing a figure dubbed Lambshank. Lambshank is characterized as a weird aberration of genetic engineering developed by the High Evolutionary.

Gunn revealed that he originally wrote Lambshank with Stan Lee in mind, given the actor’s age and the possible challenges of transporting him to Atlanta for shooting. The character was supposed to be animated, with a Stan Lee-like visage and Lee supplying the voice. Unfortunately, Lee passed away before this idea could come to fulfillment. Gunn stated his gratitude for working with Lee and directing him on multiple times during the Marvel flicks.
