The most recent Secret Invasion episode reveals how G’iah survived being shot in the chest by Gravik. “Beloved,” the fourth episode of the Disney+ limited series, began immediately after the previous episode, in which Talos’ daughter, Gi’ah (Emilia Clarke), attempted to flee the rebel Skrull compound only to be stopped by Gravik, who knew she was the spy feeding Fury and her father information. While the episode left G’iah’s death uncertain, “Beloved” began with Extremis healing G’iah’s bullet wound, showing that G’iah had changed herself into a Super Skrull before to being shot by Gravik. G’iah is the second known Super Skrull in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following Gravik.
G’iah will survive to see another day, but her father has died. Ben Mendelsohn’s character, Talos, was slain at the conclusion of “Beloved.” After being injured while protecting the President of the United States, Talos is stabbed in the chest by Gravik, who appears to be the only one authorised to murder a prominent character in Secret Invasion. While Talos’ death might be a ruse, the figure had returned to his Skrull form before the credits rolled, as is customary when a Skrull dies. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) has now lost two important comrades and friends to Gravik, setting up a dramatic and likely last encounter between the two characters in the final two episodes. Talos first featured in Mendelsohn’s 2019 blockbuster Captain Marvel. He then featured in Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) as Nick Fury, with Secret Invasion being his third, and likely last, appearance in the MCU. Clarke previously lauded Mendelsohn’s performance in Secret Invasion, adding, “… the thing about acting is that it’s like tennis: you’re better with a better partner.” And he’s the most talented actor I’ve ever worked with.”
Aside from the murders of Maria Hill and Talos, the revelation that James “Rhodey” Rhodes/War Machine (Don Cheadle) has been replaced by a Skrull has been the most stunning scene in Secret Invasion thus far. The reveal was originally hinted at in the third episode and confirmed in “Beloved,” which included a quick glimpse of the Skrull who had acquired the identity of Rhodey. It’s unclear whether the true “Rhodey” will be rescued before the end of Secret Invasion. Cheadle, on the other hand, has hinted that Secret Invasion “kicks off what happens in Armour Wars,” implying that the following film might deal with “Rhodey” learning about all that has transpired in the MCU during his time as a Skrull captive.
