Secret Invasion is nearing its conclusion, and “Beloved” exposed G’iah’s true sympathies. The character, daughter of Talos and Gravik’s lieutenant, was the biggest unknown in Marvel’s spy thriller series. While the story may have fan difficulties, where G’iah sits in this struggle is brilliant writing because she’s on her own. G’iah improved after Gravik shot her, which would have been a waste of Secret Invasion’s greatest character. G’iah was spying about the Super Skrull lab when she was able to infuse herself with the powers of Groot, Cull Obsidian, a Jotunheim frost beast, and, most crucially, Extremis from Iron Man 3. This cured the wound that should have killed her, allowing her to fight another day. Throughout the series, though, the question has been who G’iah is fighting for. Some suspected she was devoted to Gravik, while others assumed she was working covertly for her father Talos or another force of “good.” Despite this, she exposed herself to be on her own side during a painful encounter with Talos. She adores her father, but she agrees with Gravik that his leadership would compel the Skrulls to live in hiding, without a home. She opposes human genocide but does not believe that being polite would change humanity’s hearts.
While the invasion of Gravik’s Skrulls has been far from secret, G’iah was once a firm believer. Gravik, it appears, has always had doubts about her actual allegiances. She didn’t lose faith until Talos told her Gravik’s troops killed her mother. In the second episode of Secret Invasion, she was the one who reported the safe house to the authorities. When she encounters Talos after being shot, she informs him that she “belongs” exclusively with him. Nonetheless, she begs him to tell her about his plans to provide a home for their people, who have been in exile for more than 30 years. Talos understands mankind, while being an optimist. He believes that merely putting an end to Gravik and disclosing his one-million-strong people will result in humanity’s acceptance. He assures G’iah that if they and the others maintain making great contributions to the Earth, humans would recognise them as equals, and that his plan is dependent on the Skrulls “showing them who we are.” The issue G’iah has with this is that Talos wants them to accomplish it without exposing their true appearance. She walks away from her father, unaware that it will be the final time she sees him alive.
The fate of Skrulls in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a mystery that this series seeks to solve. However, now that Talos is gone, it will be up to G’iah to lead her people in the future. It will all depend on her, whether this means continuing to work with Fury to make Earth their home or something different. There is a quick image of G’iah kneeling over a body and seemingly sobbing in the Secret Invasion trailer. She will realise that her father, like her mother, perished for Fury’s purpose. While this may encourage her to fight for mankind against Gravik, it may also infuriate Nick Fury. Based on another scene from the teaser in which she enters his and Priscilla’s London house with a gun, she may try to kill him in retaliation.
The true question spectators should be asking regarding the Skrulls’ future is how mankind reacts to them. After his wound compels him to show his real appearance, Fury is able to persuade a British soldier that Talos is an ally. But, as Talos predicted, would humans welcome the shapeshifting species? Or will humanity respond to this attack in the same way they have in the past, by blaming a whole people for the conduct of a chosen few? Whatever they decide, the Skrulls will be fortunate to have G’iah as their leader.
