Nia DaCosta spoke about directing The Marvels as both a filmmaker and a fan. DaCosta, a self-described “big nerd from New York City,” discussed the difficulty of directing the Captain Marvel sequel in an interview. “The biggest challenge was finding a balance between my point of view as a director and my point of view as a comic book nerd,” she added. “Obviously, there are differences between the comics and the films, and I’m like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa!’ ‘You’re being too much of a nerd,’ [Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige] would say at times. Please halt.'”
The cast of The Marvels praised DaCosta’s efforts wholeheartedly. “Even if you work with her once, you do feel like, ‘Oh, we’re the best of buds,” Tayonah Parris, who portrays Monica Rambeau and previously worked with DaCosta in 2021’s Candyman, said. I admire her intelligence. I admire how firm her stance is. And I like her unique perspective on the topic.” Iman Vellani, who returns as Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel, adds, “She has a really calm vibe, too.” These films are not easy to create. There are a million, bajillion tiny moving parts. She and [executive producer Mary Livanos] did an outstanding job of keeping morale high. Even if they wanted to pull people’s heads off, they would never show it and would never put their burden on anybody else.”
In the first trailer for The Marvels, Monica, Kamala, and Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) become quantumly entangled with one another, leading the heroines to swap places anytime they utilise their abilities. Zawe Ashton will play Dar-Benn, a Kree rebel and the film’s major enemy, while Park Seo-joon will play Carol’s ally. Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, and Saagar Shaikh reprise their roles as Kamala’s family, Lashana Lynch as Monica’s mother Maria, Randall Park as FBI agent Jimmy Woo, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury from earlier Marvel Cinematic Universe productions. Currently, Fury is the primary character in the Disney+ series Secret Invasion, which sees Marvel’s greatest secret agent return to Earth to cope with the Skrulls’ manipulations. The events of Secret Invasion, according to Jackson, will help build up The Marvels. “This series has to happen so that The Marvels can happen,” he explains. “All of these things are connected in an intriguing way.”
