The director of The Marvels, Nia DaCosta, expressed her profound personal connection to Ms. Marvel. The Marvels director, the first Black woman to direct a Marvel Studios picture, detailed her path from childhood Marvel fan to helming a big blockbuster in a recent interview. “I’m a big nerd from New York City, and here was this hero who was a big nerd from Jersey City, writing fan fiction the way I used to when I was that age,” DaCosta said, recalling her discovery of the first Ms. Marvel comics in college. “It was really fun to feel close to that character in that really specific way, in a way you don’t often feel when it’s Iron Man or Thor,” DaCosta continued. Knowing I could be a part of bringing this character I’ve loved for a decade to the big screen was really thrilling to me.”
DaCosta acknowledged the difficulties of directing a sci-fi movie while channelling her inner comic book nerd. She shared a conversation with Marvel Studios President and CEO Kevin Feige in which she had to reconcile her viewpoint as a filmmaker with her affinity for the source material, “Sometimes Kevin would be like, ‘You’re being too much of a nerd.'” Please halt.'” Zawe Ashton, who portrays the ruthless Kree rebel Dar-Benn on The Marvels, revealed her surprising path to joining the group. She had already auditioned for other Marvel productions, so when she received a call giving her a position in Captain Marvel 2, she was taken aback. Ashton praised DaCosta’s efforts, stating, “Having Nia’s empowerment — and the empowerment of the stunt team — to know that it’s about your mental attitude, agility, and strength was life-changing.”
The connection between the three principal performers, Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani, according to DaCosta, was vital in the picture. DaCosta said of the sisterly closeness on set, “It was really fun to see how their relationship mirrors their relationship in the movie.” “I’m excited that the MCU has three lead women, all from very diverse backgrounds, and they’re all baddies in their own way,” Larson, who portrays Carol Danvers, said. It’ll be thrilling just to see these brilliant, humorous, intellectual, and troubled ladies find their way.”
