The current poster for The Marvels features Nick Fury, causing many to assume he will play an important role in the film’s plot. Carol Danvers, as Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau, nicknamed Photon (Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan, called Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) tower over the visual, while Nick Fury, played once again by Samuel L. Jackson, takes centre stage. Many have interpreted his prominent placement on the billboard as a clue that the ex-head of S.H.I.E.L.D. would play an important role in the story, but this is still purely speculative at the time of writing. Fury has appeared in both trailers for The Marvels, however his involvement in the tale has yet to be revealed.
The Marvels poster also depicts a swarm of flerkens around Fury’s feet, with Goose leading the attack. According to executive producer Mary Livanos, the charming extraterrestrial will play a much larger part in the sequel. “Goose is her own individual. “She’s full of surprises, and she’s got a lot in store for the rest of this story,” Livanos added. Goose has a lengthy history with Fury, having been the beast responsible for his damaged eye and, later, the Tesseract. Jackson’s involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been extensive and lucrative, having originally appearing in the 2008 film Iron Man. Currently, he’s leading the fight against the Skrulls in the Disney+ series Secret Invasion, which he claims will help him prepare for his part in The Marvels. “This series has to happen in order for The Marvels to happen.” “All of these things are connected in an interesting way,” Jackson explained.
Secret Invasion director Ali Selim discussed Fury’s future in The Marvels further, noting that Marvel Studios never imposed strict guidelines on how Jackson’s character should be treated in the Disney+ programme. “They’re not long discussions [with The Marvels creative team],” Selim said. “It’s simply, ‘Where do you require Fury?'” ‘Do you need him here?’ We then write into that. That sort of thing is really straightforward since it’s all beyond my pay grade.”
