The announcement of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 fuels speculation of a Venom spinoff.

Insomniac Games is rumoured to be working on a Spider-Man 2 spinoff featuring Venom. With Spider-Man 2 coming out in just over two months and the previously announced Wolverine game still on the road, Insomniac just disclosed that they are working on a third AAA title alongside them. While they have been tight-lipped regarding the game’s content, some have hypothesised that it may be a spinoff project with Venom as the playable protagonist. Though the developer has not given any specifics about the game, Venom’s major part in Spider-Man 2 and Insomniac’s reputation for producing comic book games have stoked suspicion that the secret third project in the works is another comic book title. Spider-Man had a spinoff, Miles Morales, as a launch title for the PlayStation 5, so the studio is no stranger to sequels. Furthermore, Tony Todd, who voiced Venom in Spider-Man 2, has announced that he had taken on another voice-acting position since the game’s release. Though he has not confirmed the project, he did allude to the part as “you know who” in a viral Tweet.

Spider-Man 2 expands on the plot of the original game, with two prominent villains, Venom and Kraven the Hunter, arriving in New York to assassinate Peter Parker. The game features Peter Parker and Miles Morales as playable Spider-Men, and promotional images for the game, as well as subtle hints by Venom co-creator Todd McFarlane, led many to assume Venom would be playable as well, however Insomniac has not confirmed this. It would not be the first time that gamers have control of the alien symbiote, whether in Spider-Man 2 or in his own spinoff games. Ultimate Spider-Man had a plot dedicated to Eddie Brock, with entire levels and chunks of gameplay dedicated to Venom, albeit it was the last time the character appeared in a major Spider-Man video game until now. In comic books, Venom has evolved from a villain with a personal grudge against Peter Parker to a relatively heroic figure nicknamed the “lethal protector.” Since his introduction in Amazing Spider-Man, the character has progressed from villain to hero, leading to suspicion that his character arc in Spider-Man 2 may pave the way for a similar position in a future game.
