James “Rhodey” Rhodes’ replacement by a Skrull has been verified by Secret Invasion. Before it is officially revealed as a Skrull in “Betrayed,” the third episode of the Disney+ limited series, there are various hints that Don Cheadle’s adored character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a Skrull. Samuel L. Jackson’s character, Nick Fury, is heard informing Talos that he has “a lead on a rebel Skrull that’s high up in the U.S. government, and he’s in London right now.” Prior to this, Rhodey served as the United States’ envoy in London. Later on in “Betrayed,” Fury tells the Skrull posing as Talos that no one ever addresses him by his first name, much like Rhodey did when they spoke in Episode 2.
Finally, Fury’s wife is shown making a phone call right at the end of the programme. When asked to speak to Gravik, the commander of the dissident Skrulls, the person on the other end responds, “Yeah, well, you’re talking to me.” Considering that voice is unmistakably Cheadle’s, Rhodey has indeed been replaced by a Skrull. When Rhodey was replaced by a Skrull is not yet known. Since 2010, when Cheadle took over Terrence Howard’s role as Colonel James Rhodes/War Machine for the Phase 1 movie Iron Man 2, Cheadle has played the character. Rhodey becoming a Skrull during the events of The Infinity Saga is implausible, but not impossible, since that would compromise his connection with the late Tony Stark. Cheadle has only made one other appearance in the Multiverse Saga of the MCU thus far, and that was as a guest star in the season debut of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021). For the sake of the viewers, it is hoped that Secret Invasion’s upcoming episode would provide additional information about Skrull Rhodey.
Additionally, “Betrayed” disclosed that Priscilla Fury (Charlayne Woodard), Fury’s wife, had communication with Gravik. Some viewers thought that the former S.H.I.E.L.D. director was not aware that his wife was a Skrull when she initially appeared at the conclusion of the second episode. However, the episode’s ambiguity was done on intentionally, according to director Ali Selim, who explained that Fury is aware that his wife is a Skrull: “In the screenplay, he knows. It was also intriguing because perhaps he was unaware when we took the photo. In the end, we altered it such that viewers were left wondering if the subject was aware of it or not. Fans were right to be wary of Priscilla, though, since Episode 3 revealed that she is at least somewhat associated with Gravik. The film Secret Invasion is based on the well-known 2008 Marvel Comics storyline of the same name, which follows Nick Fury as he learns of a covert invasion of Earth by a radicalised Skrull faction — shape-shifting, green-skinned aliens that were first introduced to the MCU in 2019’s Captain Marvel. Disney+ now has the first three episodes of Secret Invasion available for viewing.
