A popular Black Widow gadget returns in Secret Invasion

The Widow’s Veil, a piece of S.H.I.E.L.D. technology employed by Black Widow during the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, was brought back in the penultimate episode of Secret Invasion. Natasha Romanoff first employed the Photostatic Veil, commonly known as the Widow’s Veil, in the 2014 film Captain America: The Winter Soldier. She utilised the mask, which can replicate an individual’s face and voice, to join the World Security Council as Pamela Hawley, one of its members. The Widow’s Veil was also seen in the film Black Widow and episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) uses the Widow’s Veil to bypass a security checkpoint in Secret Invasion.

Rick Mason, who initially appeared in the 2021 film Black Widow, made an unexpected reappearance in Secret Invasion Episode 5. In the episode, O-T Fagbenle reprises his role as the former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, delivering the Widow’s Veil to Nick Fury while also flying him to Finland to meet up with Sonya Falsworth (Olivia Colman). Fagbenle makes his second appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while Mason makes his first appearance in a decade. For those who are unfamiliar, Black Widow takes place in 2016 – between the events of Civil War and Infinity War – whereas Secret Invasion takes place in 2026. Following their meeting, Fury and Sonya drive to a graveyard to recover “The Harvest,” a vial containing the DNA of various Avengers, including Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. The DNA was recovered following the Battle of Earth, which is featured in Avengers: Endgame. Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) is chasing “The Harvest” so that he may utilise the DNA to transform his army into Super Skrulls with the same abilities as the Avengers.

Secret Invasion Episode 4 validated fans’ earlier concerns by showing that before to the events of the Disney+ limited series, Don Cheadle’s James “Rhodey” Rhodes had been replaced with a female Skrull. While Secret Invasion does not specify when Rhodey was kidnapped and replaced by a Skrull, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has teased that all would be revealed in the next series finale when viewers come to “understand exactly how long he’s been a Skrull.” He also enjoys “the idea of fans going back and watching some of Rhodey’s other appearances and realising that that wasn’t him.”
