The new Punisher from Marvel revived the Night Shift. A sneak peek at the next Punisher from writer Devid Pepose, illustrator Dave Wachter, and colorist Dan Brown at Marvel Comics shows how Joe Garrison, the most recent vigilante to take up the mantle, breaks into the skyscraper stronghold of a formidable criminal lord known only as The Offer. The Offer summons his own group of mercenaries to kill the Punisher when he realises there is a threat approaching him, and the new Night Shift seems more than happy to comply.
The original Night Shift was made up of a variety of superpowered creatures that the evil Locksmith had kidnapped and imprisoned. They were commanded by the vigilante known as the Shroud. After Jessica Drew, a.k.a. Spider-Woman, intervened to liberate her, the Shroud eventually gathered a small group of allies who laboured to topple many criminal enterprises. Even though they gave off the impression of being criminals in and of themselves, the original Night Shift was committed to eliminating the criminal underworld that had taken advantage of them. Following in the traditions of its mercenary ancestors, Night Shift has seen several modifications to its roster and mission statement throughout the years. The present iteration is commanded by the malevolent Carl Burbank, dubbed Bushwacker.
The first issue of the current Punisher series was Joe Garrison’s Marvel Comics debut. Joe was a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, and his story is similar to that of Frank Castle, the original Punisher. Similar to Frank, Joe harboured a deep-seated yearning for vengeance after losing his family in a horrific act of planned violence. Joe was an almost ideal substitute for Frank as the Punisher because of this, his extensive experience, and his seemingly limitless resources. This was especially true after the original was taken to Marvel’s Weirdworld after the end of his tenure as the leader of the evil, age-old ninja cult known as The Hand.
