According to reports, Kevin Feige is altering his approach to hiring directors for the MCU

Marvel Studios has always had a knack for discovering lesser-known talents and making them household names. The Russo Brothers, who previously only directed sitcoms for television, went on to handle two of the biggest films of all time. Similarly, WandaVision director Matt Shakman is now leading the charge on Fantastic Four, and showrunner Jac Schaeffer was hired again by Marvel Studios to be involved in two other projects. However, recent projects such as 2023’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania penned by Jeff Loveness, a talented writer with a limited filmography outside of Rick and Morty, have not been as well received by fans.

A new rumor suggests that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is now changing his strategy when it comes to hiring behind-the-camera talent for the MCU. According to insider Jeff Sneider, while speaking on The Hot Mic, Feige wants to hire more established talent behind the camera. Back in June 2022, sources told Deadline’s Justin Kroll that Feige is hoping for a hands-off approach to the production of Fantastic Four.

It’s important to note that Marvel Studios is not completely against working with lesser established talent. Discovering new creatives has been a staple since the MCU was created, and Marvel Studios wouldn’t completely turn its back on those options. However, it’s easy to see Marvel taking those bigger risks a little less often than before, especially when it comes to its more notable properties.

The company’s choice to bring on Chloé Zhao as the director for The Eternals resulted in the MCU’s first Rotten-branded movie on Rotten Tomatoes. While the critical reception for The Eternals was mixed, it still made over $400 million worldwide.

Many fans believe that Michael Waldron and Jeff Loveness, two new on-the-scene writers, will be next in line to be replaced with more experienced and proven talent. Both writers were involved with poorly received MCU projects, and Loveness’ recent Quantumania film did not sit well with many. However, it’s important to remember that Marvel Studios has a history of taking risks and making them pay off.

In conclusion, while it’s rumored that Marvel Studios may be adjusting its hiring strategies for behind-the-camera talent, it’s important to remember that the company’s history is rooted in discovering new creatives. While Marvel may take fewer risks when it comes to its more notable properties, it’s unlikely that the company will completely abandon its practice of discovering lesser-known talent. As always, only time will tell what kind of talent Marvel Studios will bring on for its future projects.
